Description

In this lesson students will learn how to use past continuous in the context of embarrassing situations and behaviour. They will also learn about interrupted past continuous.This will be done through a range of grammatical exercises and activities.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of the past continuous in the context of embarrassing situations and behaviour.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide scan and detailed reading practice using a text about embarrassing situations in the context of school and daily life.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To engage students

Find your other half. I prepare cards with 1 half of a word pair on each e.g. singing +a song, building + a house, drinking + water. I give each student 1 card and ask to find the word that would be the best match. Demonstration. Hand out cards. When they all find pairs, I display correct combinations.

Practice#1 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with semi-controlled practice of the target language

What time is this? Past Continuous. How do we create it? was (I, he,she,it) were (you, they, we) + verb infinitive+ ing In the last lesson your were reading about embarrassing situations. Now work in pairs. Ask and answer questions about these pictures.

Teach (5-6 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

What was the first picture about? She was sleeping in a class when the headmaster came. Use timeline to explain how we use past continues an past simple. CCQs to check if they have understood. Pair work. Complete sentneces and draw timelines to the rest two sentnences. Feddback. Display correct timelines.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language

1.You will read about one more embarrassing situation. For now, just read as story and answer a question. Did woman have a baby? How have 1 min. 2. Feedback. Did woman have a baby? No. Why did they think she had? She was big. Was it embarrassing situation? Yes. maybe draw it. 3. You have to put verbs into a correct form. Choose Past continues or Past Simple. Hand out worksheets. 2. Peer checking. Check your answers with your friends. 3. Feedback. Elicit correct answers. If needed draw a timeline to explaine it.

Practice #2 (5-7 minutes) • To give students semi-controlled speaking practice with the target language

Work in pairs. You need to ask and answer 6 questions. Hand out worksheet with questions. PW. What were you doing ….? • 15 minutes ago • Two hours ago • At six o’clock this morning • At eleven o’clock last night • At six o’clock last Sunday • At this time last week

Extra activity (7-8 minutes) • to give students more freer practice in speaking

I hand out small cards with pictures. and stress that they need keep them completely secret. Tell sts that there was a bank robbery yesterday at 3 o'clock. if the picture shows the bank they were a bank robber. If they weren't the bank robber, their pictures show what they were doing. everyone must tell the truth except for the bank robber who must tell a lie about what he was doing. Then they change their roles.
