In this lesson, students learn about about past simple through reading text about people's weekends. The lesson starts with teacher asking SS about what they did on their weekend. Then they read a text. Then there is highlighting and clarification. Finally, there is some controlled practice through exercises, then semi-controlled practice and freer practice

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of the past simple tense in the context of last week

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about past in the context of last week


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher gets SS interested by asking them what they did on their weekend. Make a link to the previous lesson explaining the reading task to remind them of what the people said in the listening.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher exposes SS to the TL in the context through reading. Teacher gives instructions to SS "Now you will receive a text, the one you listened to before." Teacher gives out HO of the Audio Transcript to SS SS read the text.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Teacher makes students work in groups and find all the past simple verbs in the text. Teacher nominates a student from each group to tell some verbs they found.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning - past simple for last week(past). Elicit from SS Form - On Sunday I phoned a friend. (I-subject, phone(d)-past simple, + ...) (listen(ed)) Elicit from SS Pronunciation (worked, stayed, listened, cooked)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Teacher tells SS "I will give you an exercise. You have to read the sentences and decide who they are about. You can use the text from before." Teacher gives out HO1 to SS Feedback by writing sentences on board and making SS come up and write the name next to the sentences.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Teacher tells SS "Now I will give you some handouts. There you will see the present form of the verbs. You need to write the past form for these verbs." Give out HO2 to SS. Feedback by playing the recording 2.17

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Exercise 4 "You need to add I or We and a verb in these sentences" Monitor Teacher asks SS to underline which sentences are true of them. Feedback by asking some SS what is true for them. Teacher writes down some sentences with errors SS made on board and makes SS find the errors correct them.
