Main Aims

  • To enable students to understand and practice of language used for asking questions in the context of travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss fluency practicing their speaking skills in a conversation in the context of travel
  • To provide Ss gist reading practice by using a text about Hong Kong in the context of travel
  • To provide Ss gist listening practice using a text about booking a tour in the context of travel.

Procedure

Lead-in (5 minutes) • To meet new students joined the class today and to introduce the lesson and engage students in the lesson topic by asking questions related to the context.

- Greet the class and meet new students. - Ask students the following questions: "Do you like travelling?" "Do you like Asian countries?" "Have you ever been to Hong Kong?" "Where is Hong Kong?" "Is it a city or a country?" "How many people live there? Can you guess?"

Pre-Reading (3 minutes) • To introduce Ss with the vocabulary they will encounter through the lesson stages.

-Eliciting the vocabulary: island, harbour,port, view, Chinese Junk. CCQs: Island: Is Hong Kong is surrounded by the sea? (Use body language) No. Other countries? What about Great Britain(or Cyprus) ? Yes. So Great Britain is an island. Harbour: In harbour, do ships or cars stop? Ships stop. Is harbour part of a city? Yes. Port: Is a port bigger than a harbour? Yes. If a city has more than one harbours, does it become a port? Yes( If it is manmade) View: From Bosphorus Bridge, do you see a forest or Bosphorus? Bosphorus. From Bosphorus Bridge, what view do you see? Bosphorus view.

Reading for Gist (3 minutes) • To provide Ss with the text about the context and support them to read the vocabulary they learnt in the previous stage for preparing them to use FL in further stages of the lesson

Give the instructions. ICQs: Are you working in groups or in pairs? Pairs. Are you reading or listening? Reading. Are you answering the questions after you read? Yes. - Then give the leaflets and woman-man picture and the questions. -After they finished tell them to change partners to check their answers. -WCFB

Listening for Gist (3 minutes) • To engage Ss in FL by improving their receptive skills of listening, getting them to be familiarized to the pronunciation of th TL.

Give the instructions. Tell Ss they have 2 minutes. ICQs: Are you reading or listening?Listening Are you working alone or in pairs? Pairs. - Give Ss the questions - After they finish, give them AK.

Focus on Language (7 minutes) • To encourage Ss to reveal what they learnt about FL by using their receptive skills in previous stages of the lesson

ICQs: Are they sentences or questions? Questions Are you matching the words? No. Are they in correct order? No. Are you putting the words in correct order? Yes. -Place the sentences on different parts of the table and start the activity. Monitor from behind and try not to interfere but be available. Try to hear their discussions for pronunciation stage. CCQs

Focus on Pronunciation (5 minutes) • To provide students with appropriate pronunciation of FL.

- Write the questions on the board. -Emphasize schwa sound in "does it" -Drill the language.

Practice (5 minutes) • To allow students to integrate the FL to their productive skills: Writing and Speaking.

ICQs: Are you reading or writing? Writing Are you working alone or in pairs? Pairs. CCQs: What kind of tour is it? Night tour? Bus tour? Do you travel by tram? by train? by helicopter? In this stage, monitor as much as you can - focus on 2 3 students to determine the mistakes made by students. Use them later in Error Correction stage.

Error Correction (3 minutes) • To give students feedback on the language they used in Practice activity

- While monitoring the Ss, write the mistakes they make when they use FL. - After the activity is finalized, get their attention on the board, to the incorrect sentences. - Ask: "What's wrong with them?" - Try to lead the Ss to the correct form of language.
