Description

In this lesson, students will practise reading for specific information and detail in the context of a first aid quiz. Students will learn new target language related to first aid. They will also work out meaning of the vocabulary related to 'Minor Illnesses and Conditions' topic. They will practise and produce the target language in the follow-up speaking activity.

  • To provide clarification and practice of minor illnesses and conditions in the context of health problems
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a discussion in the context of a first aid quiz

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To learn the Ss'names. To set lesson context and engage students

Ask Ss to write their names on pieces of paper and put them onto the desks. Show Ss a first aid kit. Elicit what it is. Have a short competition in groups to matching the names of first aid kit's items to the pictures. The first tea who finish the earliest and got all the correct answers will win. Ss work in groups of 4-5 on matching the items to the pictures. Monitor. Collect up the worksheets. Write the answers on the board. Let Ss check the answers and predict who the winning team is.

Pre-Reading (9-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible;

Get Ss look at the title and the pictures and work in pairs to brainstorm situations of medical emergency. Ss work in pairs and brainstorm the situations. Monitor - help if needed W/C FB - writing the situations on the board Ask Ss to look at the six quiz questions and think of what the highlighted words might mean. Ss work in groups of three and work out the meaning of the TL. Monitor - pay attention to problem areas for FB W/C FB - Ss explain the meaning of the TL. Clarify the meanings which were difficult to understand, highlight a form and pronunciation.

While-Reading #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with reading for detail task

Ask Ss to work in pairs and do the quiz. Monitor from a distance. Don't check the answers as it is the next stage task.

While-Reading #2 (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging reading for specific information and detail tasks

Explain to Ss that they will deal with jigsaw reading to get the answers to the quiz. Ask students to form groups to read their half of the answers to the quiz. Monitor - help if needed. FB - to each group separately. Give the answers to Ss and ask to check them in the current groups. Regroup Ss so that they can tell their answers to each other. Ss work in new groups and share the answers. Monitor. W/C FB - ask Ss to write correct answers to the quiz on the board.

Post-Reading #1 (5-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to expand students' vocabulary and review some vocabulary Ss know

Give Ss strips of paper with the new language items from Vocabulary Bank to pairs of Ss, ask them to work out the meaning together. Have them stand up and match the words with the pictures on the walls. When Ss find the right pictures ask them to stick both of them onto the board. Ss in walk around the class and match the vocabulary with the pictures. Monitor. W/C FB - check the answers. Drill the TL.
