Description

This will be a listening lesson based on recording of three friends who discuss what they did over the previous weekend. Then there will be a pre-listening task related to vocabulary. Finally there will be some some controlled speaking practice.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using a recording of a conversation about activities and events in the context of last week / weekend activities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of vocabulary related to activities in the context of the weekend

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- preset ANSWER KEY for detailed listening exercise - preset computer with MOVIE file and AUDIO file - write Saturday and Sunday on the WB and elicit "MONDAY." Confirm via banter that today is Monday. Draw a square around both Saturday and Sunday and elicit the word "weekend." Ask a student or two "do you like the weekend?" - hold up HO and point to title. Say broadly that "I love Monday, " perhaps elicit groans or contradictory statements. Explain that we will watch a movie about Monday and answer questions on handout. - distribute HO to SS and start movie. - fast FB on HO elicit shout-outs - clear board and write weekend on top, a "T" with "stay at home" and "go out." Provide two examples of "read a book" and "Disco dancing" and elicit more responses.

Speaking: Magazine Quiz (9-10 minutes) • Asking fellow students questions about the weekend.

Put class into pairs. Hold up and describe HO with magazine quiz. Show how to fold in half. Indicate all should answer column A and column B for their partners. Distribute HO and monitor Tell ss to flip HO and add the numbers. -informally quiz individual students to see who has a high number for A or B

Pre-Listening Vocabulary (7-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the audio recording and make it accessible

elicit the six words using Vocabulary Analysis chart. put each word on board as they have been conveyed and clarified. Model: Use above in sentences and add beneath each word Concept check: using Vocabulary Analysis Drill: Both individual word as well as each sentence below. Divide class into 3-4 groups. Exercise: Distribute HO with fill-in the blanks with vocabulary in sentences. Distribute HO key with all words defined with pictures.

Gist Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

- "We will listen to three friends who will discuss their weekend. - "Indicate HO and say we will guess what each person says - Distribute HO - play 2.16 - Pair off class and have them FB each other - nominate a person from each pair to provide answer and write on WB.

Detailed Listening (12-13 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Show fill-in HO and describe instructions. Play the tape, but pause for each person, allow them to catch up SS Feedback: After completion form basic pairs and tell FB each other. Final Feedback: Tell whole class to stand up and locate answer key in 3 different locations on wall in class.
