Description

In this lesson, ss will be engaged in receptive skill development by reading for the gist and detailed information, through a reading text about fears and phobias. They will also learn a few words that are relevant to the context and mentioned in the reading task.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice from a text that includes vocabulary in the context of fears and phobias.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To learn new vocabulary in the context of fears and phobias

Procedure

Stage 1 ( Warmer/Lead-in) (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Have projection ready -Show phobia related pictures -Try to elicit the words "fear" and "phobia"

Stage 2 (Pre-teaching the vocabulary for reading) (4-5 minutes) • To clarify vocabulary items for the reading text

-Project matching exercise on WB -Pair ss and tell them to match the words with their meanings -Demonstrate, match one yourself -Give them HO -Give the answers on WB

Stage 3 (Pre-Reading) (3-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-Pair ss and tell them to read the questions and think about the answers -Tell them not to worry if they do not know the answers to some of the questions, as they will find out the answers in the reading text. ICQ: Are you going to answer them now? Are you going to do this individually or in pairs? -Give them HO

Stage 4 (While-Reading) (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and apecific information

-Tell ss to read the text for its main idea and find the answers to the questions in reading ex. 1 -Give them the text -Ask them to compare their answers with a partner -Check answers with the class

Stage 5 (While-Reading) (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed,deduction and inference

-Tell ss to match the questions in exercise 1 to the paragraphs that contain answers -Ask them to compare their answers with their neighbour -Check the answers with the class

Stage 6 (Post-Reading) (5-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what the have learned

-Tell students to complete the gaps in the text with the phrases -Give them HO -Have them compare their answers with a partner -Check the answers with the class

Stage 7 (Focus on Vocabulary) (6-7 minutes) • To practice vocabulary building

-Tell ss to complete the table with words from the text -Point out that this includes the missing sentences in exercise 3 ICQ: Are you going to complete this table with random words? Is this includes the missing sentences too? -Give them HO -Ask ss to compare their answers in pairs -Project abswers for visual feedback -Tell ss to work on their own to complete the sentences with a word from the table in ex. 1 -Give them HO -Ask them to compare their answers with a partner -Give the answers to the class

Stage 8 (Freer Practice) (5-6 minutes) • To get students to practice what they have learned more freely

-Tell ss to replace the phrases in italics in exercise 2 to make true sentences about themselves -Have them compare their answers with a partner -Ask ss if they found out anything interesting about their partner
