Description

In this lesson, Ss engage in speaking and writing tasks in the context of making a life change. They review and practice writing and speaking of used to+infinitive in the context of making a life change.

Main Aims

Procedure

Lead in (5 minutes) • To activate students' schemata

Ss check their home work and discuss what was done in the previous class. They are asked to recall what changes their partners have made in their lives.

Listening Practice (10 minutes) • To practice listening to draw inference from the recording based on the context of making a life change.

Pictures of 2 ladies who made a life change are displayed on the board and a recording based on making a life change is played. Ss listen to the recording and discuss the following in pairs. Do you think it was a good idea for the women to make these life changes? Why / Why not? Would you make any changes like this yourself? They share their answers with the class.

Language Input - used to +infinitive (10 minutes) • For Ss to clarify and review the use of used to + infinitive in the context of making a life change

Tr questions Ss : What did Anita use to do before she decided to travel around the world? Ans: Anita used to work in advertising. Tr. writes this sentence on the board and explains the use of used to + infinitive A few example sentences (from the listening activity) are displayed on the IWB. Anita used to work in advertising. Jasmin Wellis used to work as a doctor in York. CCQs Is this sentence in the past tense? Does she still work as a doctor? Was it a habit or was it a situation? Can you rewrite this sentence in the past simple? Yes She worked as a doctor in York. I never used to eat chocolate. Is this in the present or past? Is it a habit or a situation? How will we change this sentence into a question sentence? Did you use to eat chocolate? Is this in the present or past? Can we use used to describe a situation or habit in the present? No Pronunciation: Jasmin Wellis used to work as a doctor in York. I never used to eat chocolate. Tr says the sentences and Ss reapeat after her. Tr marks the weak and strong forms in the sentences on the board. Form: Tr writes the form of the sentences on the board.

Restricted Written Practice (15 minutes) • For Ss to identify the correct use of the target language while writing accurate sentences in the context of making a life change.

Task 1: pg 69 Ex 7A. is done . PC and WCFB are done once the task is completed. Ss listen to check their answers and also practice saying the sentences. Task 2: Ss are to work in groups and write five sentences using used to + infinitive a few correct and a few incorrect. They are to present their sentences to the class. The groups that recognises and correct the mistakes is the winner!

Speaking Practice (7 minutes) • For Ss, to practice speaking fluently and accurately using the target language.

Tr gives Ss a life changing situation and asks them to discuss the same in pairs.

Writing Practice (15 minutes) • For Ss to use write a paragraph in the context of making a life change.

Task 1: Ss are to arrange a few sentences in the proper order. Task 2: Then, Ss are to find out the following based on the sentences. In each paragraph find sentences which contain the main idea, support the idea and finish or conclude the paragraph, Task 3: Ss then complete a paragraph similar to the one in the previous tasks. PC and WCFB are done.

Restricted Written Practice: Task race (15 minutes) • To revise target language and vocabulary in the context of changes.

Ss are divided in groups and are given tasks. The groups that finishes the task first is the winner. WCFB and error correction are done
