Main Aims

  • To provide, review and practice and explination the present simple tense in the context of everyday routines

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about everyday routines. To teach vocabulary using daily routine, words like wake up, get up, read the paper, have breakfast, shower, go to school/work, start/finish work. Teach grammar - present simple: -s/-es endings

Procedure

Stage1 - Lead in (1-3 minutes) • We are establishing a common point of reference(context) by using the topic everyday routines.

- Put a picture with everyday routines on the board - Talk about things I do every day - I get up, I have a shower, I have coffee, I come to school, have more coffee, I have lessons, I have lunch, have more lessons, when lessons are finished I go home, go to gym, have dinner, watch television, go to sleep.

Stage 2 - Vocabulary (1-6 minutes) • I will introduce the daily routines in this section.

Let's talk about our routines in the evening when we go home. _ When I get home in the evening: First I put away my bag Then I put on sport clothes Then I go to gym and listen to music Then I drive home and listen to the radio Then I take a shower Then I have dinner Then I watch television Then I go to bed. - Pair SS Tell SS to tell their partner four things they do in the evening...start with "First I.. Get the partner to tell class what they do...First Murat.. Listen to the use of language Feedback - Do we go home first? When do we go to bed? Is that the last thing we do?

Stage 3 - This is a reading section where I give more information about the he/she form of present simple. (1-15 minutes) • To introduce the he/she form of present simple

Put pictures on the board of Fathima and Kemal working in a 24-hour store Establish that its a 24-hour store- - Elicit by asking what are they doing - how long is the store open? Hand out gist reading exercises Tell SS to read, explain each is reading for himself. Give them a few min to read Group SS Give handout with questions Ask SS to answer questions in their groups. Find pairs of expressions, write it on the board: get up - go to bed go to work - come home start work - finish work Check they understand go/come - (gesture) from here to there, come - (gesture)from there to start/finish - elicit answers - when do we say start, when do we say finish - Feedback on handout Questions 1. Kemal 2. Kemal 3. Kemal 4. Kemal 5. Fathima 6. Fathima - End with Fathima starts first, Kemal finishes last.

Stage 4 - Grammar Present simple: -s/-es endings (1-15 minutes) • Here I present grammar. I will clarify MFP, and SS will practise by writing some sentences as well.

Ask SS to sit back in u format Give out reading exercise Ask SS to read exercise Group ss Give out answer sheets Ask SS to fill out the verbs on the exercise sheet Go through answers together, asking SS questions to elicit answers. Write verbs on the board get up - gets up start - starts come - comes go - goes finish - finishes watch - watches As this was taught before I want to elicit from SS the changes in verbs by asking some questions, like "I wash, she washes", "We go, she goes". so SS can give me examples. Write answers on white board DRILL PRONOUNCIATION of verbs, emphasis on /z/ and /iz/ endings, like finishes, washes, watches. Elicit examples from SS to make sure SS understands concept of verbs changing when talking/writing in third person.

Stage 5 - Semi controlled practise activity (1-7 minutes) • Interactive semi controlled practice activity

Re-group SS into pairs Give exercise Explain that they have to choose a time, choose a person, and write a sentence with a daily activity next to the clock. Show them the example. Leave SS to do exercise. Feedback: ask them for answers, correct any mistakes if nessecary.
