Description

This lesson sets a general context for both lessons through reading and language focus. The Ss will learn new grammar (Past continuous) through reading, controlled and semi-controlled practice. They will also improve their reading and speaking skills by doing group and pair works

  • To provide Ss with clarification, review and practice of past continuous in contrast with simple past in the context of stories behind photos

Procedure

Stage 1 (Warmer/Lead-in) (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Greet and welcome Ss to the class -Display the picture of President Obama and ask questions. e.g. Who is he? what is his job? (eliciting words like president, former president) -Display the picture of old lady voting and ask Ss: What is she doing? because...? (eliciting and teaching words like vote and election) -If the Ss are not familiar with the words president, election and vote, write them down on the board for more clarification -Display the picture of "A moment in history" from SB page 14 -Ask WC what they think is happening in this picture "A moment in history" from SB page 14

Stage 2 (Exposure) (12-14 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-Give WC the HO of the activity and reading from SB page 14 "A moment in history" -Instruct the Ss to skim the reading individually "A moment in history" from SB page 14 to find out if they were right with the activity a from the same page -Ask the Ss "were you right?" (doing activity b from SB page 14) -Instruct the Ss to read "A moment in history" more carefully in order to answer the questions 1-7 from the activity c page 14 -After reading "A moment in history" page 14, instruct the Ss to compare their answer in pairs (PW) -Ask some of the Ss the answers to the questions 1-7 from SB page 14 -Ask them again to discuss the activity d from the SB page 14 in pairs -Monitor them to make sure they are doing it right and they all speaking in English

Stage 3 (Highlighting) (1-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-Display the activity a from the Grammar section page 14 and ask the WC first to read it and then ask them to answer the activity.

Stage 4 (Clarification) (2-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-Write the sentence "I was watching Obama's victory" on the board and ask the Ss to identify subject, verb + ing (use color coding) -Draw a timeline on the board to highlight the grammar Past Continuous -Ask the Ss to make the sentence "I was watching Obama's victory" negative and then write it on the board using color coding -Ask the Ss to make WH question sentence and question sentence with "I was watching Obama's victory"

Stage 6 (Controlled Practice) (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-Give them the activity a section 2B from the SB page 129 -Ask the Ss to complete the above activity individually -pair them again and ask them to compare their answer to the above activity -Display the above activity on OHP -Ask Ss to come and write their answer on the board -Give the Ss HO from the section 2B SB page 128 (For their further study)

Stage 7 (Semi-Controlled Practice) (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

-Ask the Ss to listen to an audio 1.41 page 14 SB -Ask them to work in pairs and write a sentence using past continuous about each sound that they hear. Pause after each sound to make sure that they writing it down -If one has problem with one vocabulary related to the sounds, I will pause ask other Ss and then I can elicit it by miming or realia -After the listening it once, I will ask WC if they want to listen to it again, if yes then play it again -Ask pairs their answers to the above activity

Stage 8 (Free Practice) (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-Ask the Ss to stand up, go around and talk to each other about anything that they want or they can also use the picture from A moment in history from the SB page 14 with their classmate using past continuous -The Ss need to change partner after each conversation that they made -Give them 8-10 minutes to complete this free activity -Monitor them to make sure they only talk in English and they doing the activity correctly
