Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of Simple Past in the context of Holidays

Subsidiary Aims

  • Listening and Speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Get Ss interested through a brief introduction of a story about typical holidays in my resort home country. Make a link to the previous lesson explaining the listening task to remind them of what the people said in the reading.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Expose ss to the TL in the context through listening (ex 3a) Do the gist tasks for both speakers (ex a and c) first but only one detailed task in the following stage. Use ex d to round off this stage.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Encourage Ss to notice the TL. Use one of Listening tasks ex 3b or 3c

Clarification (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Focus Ss on MFP of the TL. Use the Grammar section on p.128 to design a Guided Discovery task for meaning. Then use p13, Grammar ex 4a-c, to focus Ss on form.If time, use Pronounciation ex a-c.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Check Ss' understanding of meaning and form through a gap-fill. Use p 129 for this.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Consolidate the TL and allow for some production (ex 3f). - Use p 129, U2A ex b to give Ss practice in question forms, then Ss in pairs can interview each other using the questions to bring in some speaking.
