Description

In this lesson, Ss will be engaged in vocabulary building exercises, listening/speaking practice and specific information related to describing people and themselves. Most of the new information will be used in the following lessons. Ss may know some of a vocabulary, but I should think about how to convey meaning (pictures, mimes, definitions, etc.) and check Ss understand.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of adjectives to describe appearance and personality in the context of describing friends and family members.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students practce in speaking for fluency
  • To give Ss practice in listening for detail.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To get the students interested in the topic

-ask Ss (4-5 of them) to describe themselves' and each other's appearance and personality. Describe the task in my own example: I have long straight brown hair and big brown eyes, I am tall. I am clever and kind. Natalie has long straight blond hair and big blue eyes. She's tall too. She's shy.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To expose Ss to the TL through a situation, in this case listening (ex 1a)

To get students thinking about the language before they listen, they could work in pairs to describe the pictures before they listen and check.

Clarification (Appearance vocab) (4-6 minutes) • To focus on meaning, form and pronunciation of the TL

Remember to deal with meaning first (p150, ex 1a). Use pictures and a matching activity for the vocabulary as in the book.Manage feedback and drill some of the vocab

Clarification (Personality vocab) (4-7 minutes) • to focus Ss on the MFP of the TL

P150 ex 2a and b will help Ss think about meaning, and test what they know. Encourage them to work in groups/pairs for this. Do ex 2a and then FB, followed by ex 2b, or ex 2a and 2b together. Drill some of the vocab.

(Optional - if-time) Controlled practice (8-10 minutes) • to check ss' understanding of meaning

ex 2 - Ss work together to match the questions and answers. Take FB

Semi-controlled and freer practice (8-10 minutes) • To further consolidate the TL and allow for some production

p 150 ex 2d Drill some of the questions that can be used for personalised speaking practice. Remind Ss questions from the exposure stage, drill them and then students can interview each other.Get some general feedback from the Ss.
