Newsreader takes a stand

Description

In this lesson, the students read about a newsreader who refused to read a news item about a celebrity. First, the students are going to skim and scan the article, and then read it for detail. This is followed by a listening activity where the students read for specific information. Finally, there is some free practice via a discussion about the text.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about news and celebrities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information and gist listening practice using a text about American radio phone-in show

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

First ask the students about their favourite news channels.Ask them to compare the quality of the news programmes on CNN Turk or Halk TV to the news programmes on Fox, Show TV, or Star TV. The pairs will share their answers with the class.

Pre-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre teach the words "take a stand, jail, sensation, mock, heiress, shred, celebrity" by eliciting from the students through ECDW.

While-Reading #1 (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ask the ss to read the article quickly and find the sentence summarising the story. The ss will share their answers with the class.

While-Reading #2 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging task.

The students are going to scan the text and answer the true-false questions. They are going to check the answers with their partners before the WC feedback.

While-Reading #3 (4-5 minutes) • to have ss read for detail.

Ask them to read the article carefully and answer the comprehension questions. They are going to compare their answers with a partner.

While-Listening (3-4 minutes) • tohave ss listen for gist

Tell the ss they're going to hear three callers to an American radio-phone on show giving their reactions to what the newsreader did. Ask them to decide whether most pf the callers have a positive or negative reaction.

While-Listening (4-5 minutes) • to have ss listen for specific information activity

Ask the sts to have a look at the questions first, then tell them to listen and underline the correct option.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The ss are going to be regrouped and they are going to discuss the newsreader's actions.They are also going to think about what would happen if a newsreader did the same thing in Turkey.They are going to report back to the class as a group.
