Description

In this lesson the students will learn the use of articles: a, an, the and zero article. Students will also practice writing and speaking skills while doing group and pair work.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification for the use of articles, the, a, an and zero in the context of travel.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide writing practice with sentences using articles, the, a, an and zero article in various contexts.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students will be introduced to articles, the, a, an and zero. The following sentences will be written upon the whiteboard: He's got new computer: She's actress: We live in city centre: I like the cats: I go home by the bus: I will try and elicit from the students the changes to the sentences so as to be correct. 3 mins: Then handout photocopy 1 and ask students to write 'a' in the correct place. Demo: 1 min : Task: 1 min, Individual task. Get feedback from class on answers: 2 mins Then handout pictures with Carl Wilson and ask students to underline the articles, a, an, the. Demo: 1 min, Task 2: 1 min: Individual. Feedback from students: 1 min. a : determiner : weak /ə/ A1 used before a noun to refer to a single thing or person that has not been mentioned before, especially when you are not referring to a particular thing or person: an : determiner : weak /ən/ A1 used instead of 'a' when the following word begins with a vowel sound: the : determiner (PARTICULAR) : weak /ðə/ A1 used before nouns to refer to particular things or people that have already been talked about or are already known or that are in a situation where it is clear what is happening:

Grammar (7-9 minutes) • To provide the uses for a, an, and 'the' in the coming tasks through practice

Provide the students with photocopy 3 and ask them to complete questions 1-3h. Work in pairs. Demo: 1min: Task: 4 mins Then give handout photocopy 4: Students check answers: 2 mins. Feedback for correct answers: 2 mins

Practice Task(s) (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target language skills

Place 5 copies of photocopy 6, the sentences for articles 'a' and 'the' around the room and ask students to place the correct article in the sentences c-h. Demo 1 min: Task: 4 mins Groupwork: 5 groups: Feedback: 2 mins Give students photocopy 7 and ask them to work in pairs to remove the unnecessary 'the'. Demo 1 min: Task: 3 mins: Feedback 2 mins: Skip if time running out and move onto listening activity.

Audio 5.3, track 32 (6-8 minutes) • Listening

Give students handout 5, ask them to listen to track 32 on CD1 and complete the gaps in the handout. Demo 1 min: task 4 mins. Whole class feedback: 3 mins

Quiz (6-8 minutes) • To provide students' production opportunity for use of language

Ask the students to answer the quiz questions using the articles, a, an and the. Demo 1 min: Task 4 mins: Feedback 3 mins. Create new groups for this task. 5 groups.
