Description

This is a social club where they can learn about different cultures and look at what the differences are between Myanmar culture and other cultures.

Materials

Abc vocab sheet

Main Aims

  • For the students to learn about different cultures.
  • For the students to learn new phrases from different parts of the world.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To make sure that the teacher explains everything properly so they can understand.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To get the students thinking about other cultures

In pairs they will get 3 minutes to name as many different languages around the world as they can. When they 3 minutes is finished we will count and see how many they could think of and see if they know what countries they are spoken in.

Exposure/ useful language (5-7 minutes) • Vocab sheet

In this the teacher will hand out the vocab sheet, which will help them when they are talking about the other countries traditions if they are unsure on some of the words. This is also an opportunity for them to ask any questions about words they do not know on the vocab sheet.

Productive Task(s) (30-40 minutes) • For the students to successfully talk about another culture, for them to find differences and talk about them in a discussion.

First talk about Myanmar culture and what are the top 5 traditions are here; 1. clothing 2. music 3. food 4. beliefs 5. education Make sure it is not just one person talking but they all get involved and talk as a group. While they are discussing this they can write them on one side of the white board. This should take up to 10 minutes. After we can talk about the other culture that is given. Depending on the level of the students this will depend on that culture we discuss as some will be easier than others as they have already had some exposure. Survival - Thailand Waystage - British Upper Waystage - Indian They will think about what they know and also the teacher will put some input In about they culture that is being discussed. We will all write point on the board about these topics; 1. clothing 2. music 3. food 4. beliefs 5. education This should take around 10 minutes. After we will look at both sides of the board and look how they are different and how they are similar. This can take up to 15 minutes if the discussion is going well.

Conclusion (5-8 minutes) • To see if they have learnt anything and if they have remembered anything.

Ask - Would they like to live in the other country? What was one thing that surprised them about the other country?
