Description

In this lesson, students practice reading for gist and reading for details in the context of diet, based on the topic of how much water we need to drink every day.The lesson starts with ss answering a questionnaire about their water drinking habits, then ss in pairs interview each other using the Qs in the questionnaire. After that, ss go through the Qs in exercise 4.a p79. Then ss skim the article and match the questions. Later, ss go through phrases in ex. 4.c and they match the highlighted words in the article with their meanings. Lastly, as part of a freer practice to use the TL, ss ask each other the Qs in 4.a and they try to answer without looking at the article.

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed and gist reading practice using a text about how much water do we need to drink in the context of diet.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking practice for the ss first by an interview activity using the questionnaire to set the context of water drinking habits and practice the TL by answering questions about the article and reacting to it by stating whether they agree or disagree.

Procedure

Lead-in/Pre-teach (6-9 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students with the topic and provide clarification of TL.

Show picture of water Ask ss when do they drink water? How much water do they drink? Do we say how much or how many...water? (how much) Why? (water is uncountable because it's a liquid) Pre-teach: -difference between mineral water/bottled water which is cleaner? (mineral water) Which is cheaper? (tap water) -facts & myths Which one do people know/believe? (myths) Which one is true? (facts) -thirsty & dehydrated Which one do we feel? (thirst) Which one happens to our whole body? (dehydration)

Pre-Reading (9-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and personalise the topic for them and provide them with speaking practice using the TL.

Give ss handouts of questionnaires Ask ss to read and answer the questionnaire individually. 2 ms. Demo the first question with ss After they finish, demo how to use the questionnaire as an interview Qs. Ss interview each other in pairs and share their answers.

While-Reading Task 1 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with reading for gist task.

Give ss the handouts Ask ss to skim the article quickly, 30.s Ask ss what's the article about? Ask ss to go through the Qs in ex. 4.a. 30s. Demo with the ss how to answer the exercise. Ss match the Qs with the paragraphs. Ss check in pairs Show answer key on projector

While-Reading Task 2 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks.

Ask ss to go through the highlighted words in the article. Demo with the ss how to answer ex. 4.c Ss match the highlighted words with the phrases. Ss check in pairs Show answer key O/C feedback on the vocabulary.

Post-Reading Freer Task (4-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned.

Ask ss to fold the handout and hide the article Ss in pairs ask each other the Qs in ex. 4.a and answer from memory Demo with the ss how to do the activity Monitor and give feedback on use of the TL. O/C feedback on who agrees or disagrees with the article.
