Description

In this lesson, students learn to use and practice the passive and active voices in the context of Life's a beach, particularly how the Palm beach, Jumeirah, Dubai was made. They will lesson to a conversation between two friends talking about The palm Jumeirah and how it was made followed by other grammar exercises related to the active and passive voice. and at the end of the lesson, students will have a speaking activity which they will practice the target language.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of the passive and active in the context of how the Palm Jumeirah was built.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide listening for gist to get the main idea of what the text is about.

Procedure

Warmer (2-3 minutes) • To warm up the Ss and get them interested about the context of the lesson

Ask Ss to get in pairs and discuss the following questions: When did you last go to the beach? Where was it? What did you do there? then they report bach to the class.

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To introduce the context of the lesson

Show the 3 pictures to the Ss Get Ss in pairs and tell them that only one of these pictures show a natural phenomenon Which one do you think it is? Answer: The heart-shaped reef Also tell them that Spiral Jettey is visible when the level of the lake drops.

Listening (5-7 minutes) • To practice listening for gist in the context of a conversation

Tell Ss that they are going to listen to a conversation between two friends and I want you to answer these questions individually. #OHP (Listening ex.1) #Pair check #WCFB

Listening (3-5 minutes) • to practice listening for specific information

Provide Ss with the HO 1 and ask them to complete the procedure from memory work in pairs after they finish compare answers with others then play the recording one more time for Ss to check their answers.

Highlighting the target language (2-3 minutes) • To highlight the target language so that the learners are focused on it

Ask Ss to find the passive sentences from the process provided in HO 1 individually or in pairs ask them to check with others. elicit their answers and write them on the board. ICQs: are you going to discuss all the sentences? no just the passive sentences

Clarifying the TL (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Provide Ss with HO2 and ask Ss to answer the questions in exercise 1 individually or in pairs. ask them to compare their answers. OHP the sentences on the board elicit the answers as WC. Answers: 1:a,c,d 2:appropiriate form of be + p.p 3:Modal verb + be + p.p 4:c Ask Ss to do exercise 2 in pairs elicit answers from WC Answers: 1: a-d 2:c 3: b

Language practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide controlled practice focused on using the language accurately

Instruct Ss that they need to complete the facts about the Palm with appropriate passive verbs in the box. individually /pairs provide Ss with HO3 after they finished, ask them to check with other Ss. Provide the answers on the board. Answers: 1-mainland 2: sand 3: wall 4: surface 5: top 6: divers 7: 5000 8: space

Language practice (10-12 minutes) • to provide speaking practice and use the language productively

Divide Ss into 2 groups Instruct Ss that, first they need to change the passive sentences to active then group A reports to Group B and ask group b which fact is true and the same for group B. ICQ: are you going to report the same facts as the way they are written? no are you going to change them to actives first then report and ask? yes
