Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about a conversation about a website called “mapping the world” in the context of places in the world that are important to you

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of binomials in the context of places in the world that are important to you To practice fluency skills in speaking about using maps.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows pictures of different types of maps. Sts guess what kind of map it is. T shows pictures a few times in different order for sts to memorize and to practice pronunciation.

Test before teach: binomials (5-6 minutes) • To get an idea how much the sts know; to help sts realise what they can or can't do; to allow sts to use target language items

T uses OHP to show a large number of words from Vocabulary exercises 1 and 2 all over the WB in a mixed-up order. T gives one well known example. Sts need to find other pairs and match them on the WB. T monitors and heps where needed.

Pre-Listening (3-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T shows picture of the map "South is up" Sts look at the map and discuss in what way the map is different from a traditional world map. They work in pairs. 1 minute!

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

T tells sts that they are going to listen two friends talking about the map. Sts need to match the magnified areas to the list of reasons why they have been highlighted. Sts work in pairs or groups of 3 (depends on how many sts attend the class). In feedback T shows answers on OHP. T elicits and clarifies any vocabulary if needed.

While-Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening task

Sts listen to the recording again and choose the correct answers. They compare the answers in groups before checking with the class. T gives answers using OHP.

Post-Listening #1 (3-4 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Sts discuss the questions from the exercise 4. They work in groups. T sets time limit 3 minutes. T monitors.

Post-Reading # 2 (Optional) (6-8 minutes) • To practice vocabulary: Binomials

If there is still time, T asks sts to do exercises 1 and 1 from Vocabulary section. T monitors and provides feedback.
