the last holiday


In this lesson students will learn about things they did in their last holiday using questions and short answers in the past , through reading . first they will be introduced to different vocabs related to the context of holidays , after that they will ask questions in this past using those vocabs and then they will do a reading to answer some questions in the past with short asnwers and finally they will do some practice using the simple past always in the context of holidays

Main Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about the last holiday in the context of holidays

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide semi-controlled speaking to review verb/ noun collocations


Stage 1 :introduction to the lesson (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

First i will go for a short discussion with the students , i will ask them if they went lately for a short holiday , i will ask some students to talk about it briefly , after that i will put some vocabs card on the whiteboard next to my picture taken in istanbul , and i will ask them to ask me questions about my trip using the vocabs given eg. (did you take some photos ?) . (did you go for swimming ?)

Stage 2 : reading (8-14 minutes) • Reading for a specific information

before starting the reading task i will do some drilling , going through the vocabs and make sure that students pronounce them correctly I will give the students some general ideas about the text , then i will instruct them to scan the text in 5 min , then i will ask them to answer the questions ( fill in the gaps ) in pairs i will put the exercise on the projector and ask some students to come to whiteboard and fill in the gaps .

Stage 3 : Covering the text / (8-10 minutes) • semi-controlled speaking (comprehension questions ensure that the ss understood the text )

i will ask the students to cover the text again , to re-read the text again , i will ask them to answer the questions , by telling the answer . each group is going to answer a question . ( 6 questions ( 6 groups) . they will not write the answer , they will tell me the answer ( some speaking ) , after that i will try to elicit the form of the questions written in the exercise , very briefly , with the participation of the students .

Stage 4: Follow -up (Review) (8-10 minutes) • To review the verbs in the past tense using the collocations

I will ask the students to answer the questions on (ex 11) by making questions in the past simple , using the collocations that we have seen at the beginning of the session , after that i will ask them to check their answers in pairs , and see if they have the same answer . after that i will check the answers with them to make sure that they wrote the correct form of the questions
