Description

In this lesson, Ss will be provided with a clarification of comparative adjectives throughout a reading text about a trip to Thailand. They will compare two different cities of Thailand (Phuket and Bangkok) as alternatives for their holidays. Ss will have the opportunity to improve their productive skills using the target language and personalising the context.

Procedure

Lead-in (2 minutes) • To engage Ss and generate interest in the context

Ask Ss to watch the Promo video of Bangkok. Is it a modern or old place? Show Ss the Promo video. FB WC, nominate some Ss.

Reading task (3 minutes) • To practice reading for gist and contextualize the target language

Ask Ss to read the article in Material 1 and to choose a title for it. HO Material 1 (folded, ICQs). FB: Elicit the best title and write it on WB.

Eliciting and highlighting target language (5 minutes) • To elicit and highlight the target language so that Ss are focused on it

Ask Ss if they remember the Phuket article. Elicit answers. Ask Ss to look at useful vocabulary on Material 1. How is Phuket compare to Bangkok? Elicit answers WC. FB: write elicited answers on WB.

Clarifying form (8 minutes) • To clarify the form of the target language

Ask Ss to turn the worksheet around (Material 1) and read the example sentences. Ask Ss to work in pairs and complete ex. 5 (grammar rules [of Thailand]). Regroup Ss. Ss check their answers in groups. Elicit correct answers and T writes them on WB (3 categories). Which word do we use after comparatives? Elicit "than" and the difference from "then". T uses CCQs to check if Ss are on task. Ask Ss to work in pairs and write one sentence for each rule.

Clarifying pronunciation (6 minutes) • To give Ss the opportunity of practicing the pronunciation of the target language

Show Ss strong and weak pronunciation of "than". Ask Ss to tell one sentence for each rule they wrote before. Choral drilling for the sentences and ask Ss which rule we are using (CCQs). Ask Ss to spell "hotter" or "bigger". Ask Ss which words are stressed in the last sentence. Write sentence on WB. NB bad and good.

Controlled practice (6 minutes) • To give Ss the opportunity of building comperatives by their own

Inform Ss they are going to play a card game in groups. Each group will have some cards with adjectives written on them. Ss have to work in their group and write the correct comparatives on the other side of the card. Give a demo + ICQs. HO Card game. FB: T write on WB and elicit examples. Why + CCQs for form. Ask Ss to give the cards back to T.

Semi-controlled practise (7 minutes) • To provide controlled written practice of the target language

Ask Ss to work in pairs and fill in the gaps in Material 2 (ICQs). HO Material 2 (folded, ICQs). Inform Ss that Luke or Monica are speaking. Let Ss listen to recording R8.5 and decide who is speaking. FB: Answer Key with OhP. Ss can do the other exercise on Material 2 for homework.

Recall context, gist listening (4 minutes) • To give Ss the opportunity of listening for gist and to recall the context

Ask Ss to listen to the recording R8.7. Where do you think Luke and Monica went on holiday? Play the recording. FB WC.

Freer practice (4 minutes) • To provide freer oral practice using the target language

Ss are going to play a game with the previous cards. Ss have to speak in pairs and make sentences using comparative adjectives on the cards. They can talk about Bangkok, Phuket, Istanbul or any other city they have been to. FB: Elicit answers WC.
