In this lesson students read about Men and Women and give their opinions about the different subjects addressed

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about opinions in the context of Men and women

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a debate in the context of Men and women

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To activate Ss' existing knowledge of the topic

T will write on WB Man and Women OR Women and Men and ask students what do you think who should be first?

prediction task (4-5 minutes) • to encourage Ss to predict/ think about content of the text and giving them a reason to read the text

T will ask Ss to do exercise 1 page 76 in pairs, opposite sex if possible. then T will do WC FB and listen to different opinions.

pre-teach vocabulary (4-5 minutes) • to pre-teach key lexis needed to help students understand the text

T will put students in 4 or 5 groups, depends on their attendance, but not more that 4 Ss in each group. teacher will provide each group with matching cut-outs they need to match the word with its definition. when they finish answer key is provided.

reading for gist (10-12 minutes) • for Ss to get an overview of the text.

T will ask Ss to do exercise 2 and when they finish compare their answers in pairs. after that they could compare their answers with the whole group. T might ask one of the Ss about one of the questions and what did they answer.

reading for detail (8-10 minutes) • for SS to understand the text in depth.

T will ask Ss to read about the survey results and fill in the gabs with Men or Women, as they think appropriate. after they finish they will listen to an audio and compare their answers to the actual survey.

speaking task (8-10 minutes) • to develop oral/written fluency on the topic

T will write on WB ' Ladies first ' and ask students why do you think people say this always and write down two of their ideas , Ss work in groups. after 3 minutes T listens to some ideas that Ss wrote. then will provide them with a story that might be the origin of the saying 'Ladies first'.
