In this lesson, Ss are going to acquired vocabulary in the the context of information and news. They will also practise listening for gist and for specific information in the same context. Ss will finally have the opportunity of focusing on word stresses.

Main Aims

Warmer (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage Ss

Elicit lucky and climber. Divide the class into two groups (lucky people and climbers). Give a demo, ask a S to write a word on the WB. The class will help the T to guess the word without saying it, they can use their hands and gesture. Get a volunteer from each team to stand in front of the class facing peers. Each team must help their team member guess the title of Pictures 1 on the board with OhP. ICQs: Can you act? [Yes] Can you use your hands? [Yes] Can you say the word? [No]

Lead-in (6 minutes) • To generate interest in the context of the listening

Divide Ss into 4 groups (colours), Pictures 2 will be at different corners of the class. Ask Ss to stand close by their pictures. Give a demo. Ss have to match the titles (Titles 2) with the correct pictures. ICQs Do you go to pick up the titles one by one? [Yes] Do you pick all the titles at the same time? [No] Do you match the title with the picture first? [Yes] Ask Ss to go around the class and check. FB WC.

Building context (6 minutes) • To narrow the context and personalise the topic

Show Ss Picture 3 with OhP. Elicit newspapers. [blank OhP] Elicit news and different media (TV, radio, newspapers, internet). Point out that news looks plural but takes a singular verb. What time is the news on? [What time are the news on? is incorrect] Ask Ss WC (use OhP to show the questions): Where do you usually get your news? [TV, radio, newspapers, Internet] Do you watch or listen to the news every day? At what time? What was in the news yesterday? Ask Ss to work in pairs and discuss. FB WC.

Listening task 1 (4 minutes) • To practise listening for gist. To contextualise and introduce the target language

Ask Ss to listen to the recording R7.8 and put the news in the right order on Material 1. HO Material 1 (folded, ICQ). Play the recording. FB WC with OhP.

Highlighting target language. Clarifying vocabulary (5 minutes) • To highlight the target language so that Ss are focused on it

Ask Ss to work in pairs and to match the words in the vocabulary set with the correct picture of the news (Material 1). Feedback WC with OhP. Write the answers Ss are giving on WB.

Listening task 2 (5 minutes) • To practise reading for specific information

Ask Ss to read the sentences and options in part b). Ss will listen to the recording R7.8 again and choose the correct options. Play the recording. As feedback following clarification stage.

Clarification of the target language. Focus on stressed words (9 minutes) • To clairify meaning, form and pronunciation of the TL and to focus Ss attention on stressed words

Clarify the vocabulary set. Rain and climb are regular verbs. Crash, rain, climb and flood are both nouns and regular verbs. Model and drill the words (NB choose, chose, climb, flood) Clarify meaning, pronunciation and form of the sentences n.1-4 of the previous exercise. Show Ss that there are regular and irregular forms of Past simple. HO audio-script and ask Ss to listen to the recording again and focus on the stressed words. Wich words are stressed in English? Elicit answer WC.

Language practise (5 minutes) • To provide oral practise focused on using the target language

Ask Ss to speak in pairs about a similar event of the context they have watched/listen on the news. Show questions with OhP. FB WC.
