Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about places in a town or city in the context of hometowns

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a mingling activity.
  • To provide clarification of places in a town or city in the context of hometowns

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The T will show a picture of his or her hometown and say: This is my hometown. I live in _____ and I lived here for a long time. Next the T will pass out three questions to the Ss about their hometown and the place that they live in and the Ss will discuss in pairs. And T will get FB.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The T will chose a picture of a famous Thermae Bath Spa in his or her country in an attempt to preteach some of the vocabulary that the students may be unfamiliar with in the text. T will say (name of Spa) is a Thermae Bath Spa in (town) . It is very famous for its hot springs. Hot springs is the water in the Thermae Bath Spa. Do you think it is good water or bad water? S: good water T: Is it natural water or unnatural water? S: Natural water. T: Can you think of some other Thermae Bath Spas in Turkey. T gets feedback to check if they have understood the word.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T: Show picture and say This is Susan. There is a very famous thermae bath spa in England, her hometown. Lets see if Susan likes England. WB: Does Susan like England? T gives students one minute to do a gist reading on their own and answer the first question. T gets feedback after the minute. Next Ss will be given True and False statements about the text and they will do them alone. Afterwards in groups they will check their answers. Next they will find each false statement and write the true alternative under it. When they are finished they will check as a group. After they are finished they will stand up and write true and false next to the statements on the board and write the answers. So that Ss can move around a little and get the chance to check the answers other groups have. And there will be another whole class feedback to make sure everybody is on the right track. The last task will be a reading for specific information task. T will ask the Ss To underline and write the places that they find in the reading text alone. And then they will check their answers in pairs. When they are finished there will be a WC feedback so that if any Ss don't understand any of the words, they will be clarified. Each student gives an answer of the places they read from the text. If any words are unknown they have to be clarified. During the clarification stage T must clarify: pronunciation of Thermae Bath Spa and Theater.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

At the end of the lesson Ss will have a "find someone who" mingling activity. They will stand up and move around asking each other questions related to places in a town or city.
