TP5: Receptive Skills
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will be provided with a reading paragraph in the context of traveling. After a lead-in about traveling, the SS will do gist reading with a text from the workbook and answer detail questions about the text. After reading, the Ss will figure out together in groups how they would plan a longer journey (not just vacation).

Materials

Abc HO teacher-made
Abc HO New Inside Out Intermediate, p.68

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about finding peace and identity in the context of traveling to strenghten & practise the Ss' reading comprehension ability

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a concentric circle & simulation in the context of traveling

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will start with showing Ss some private pictures and try to elicit the place to introduce the context of traveling briefly. Write two words on WB: in PW discuss quickly what do you think is the difference clarify: to travel (travel from A to B for a certain purpose) & to go traveling (longer journey, mostly several countries, not a purpose necessarily) Did I go traveling or did I travel?

Pre-Reading/Listening (9 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T will do goups of three (funny abc) T will show pictures from "The Beach" to Ss; let them work in groups with the questions: What do you see? Where do you think is that? What is it about? Radio, newspaper,...? No. They discuss in groups, monitoring of T WC feedback, nominating groups after FB, teacher briefly introduces the book & the movie (author/main character Richard and main idea/shot of the movie/impact of the movie...)

While-Reading/Listening #1 (12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The Ss will get the extract from the book "the beach" to read for gist first T explains that the Ss now will first do a quick read and focus on these 2 main questions: T shows them the HO (beamer) DON'T have to get it all, don't use the dictionaries work alone, read the text and think for you about those 2 questions 3-4 minutes (leave the pics on screeen) Monitor check in groups what you came up with, exchange and agree on one word you don't get & is important FB: two people circle on the board, a, b or c, write one word each group on board

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss will do detailed and inference reading. T will show the Ss the HO on screen and explain that they need to answer the questions with true or false but they need to say WHY as well > show HO, t or f, why (underline) > work alone > if they can't do it, let them work in their groups of three > check in groups FB: let Ss (one each group) write solutions on prepared WB > check in WC, clarify, words explanation

Post-Reading/Listening (5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss speak to each other about their favorite country they have traveled so far & and the one they absolutely want to visit T builds two groups (a and b) form 2 concentric circles > 1 on 1 talk each about 1) What is your favorite country you traveled so for (or antalya withini TR e.g.) & why 2) Where you absolutly want to go next? Why Let the ones on the outside move every 40-50 secs, 3-4 times
