In this lesson Ss will learn vocabulary in the form of adjectives through guided discovery, within the context of a birthday party. The lesson will also allow the Ss to practice the productive skill of speaking. Ss will give ideas about a picture of a family around a birthday cake with teacher eliciting. There will be a quick text reading, followed by an exercise to match adjectives to the correct pictures. This will be followed by modeling and drilling of the vocabulary. The Ss will have a controlled practice exercise to choose adjectives which do not go with nouns in sentences. They will then have a semi-controlled exercise where they must form the correct words from jumbled letters and also their opposites. To finish the lesson, students will have an exercise where they will mingle according to cut-outs given to the Ss of the adjectives and opposites. They will then discuss with their partners and individually write a sentence of their own using their adjectives.

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T will put up picture on the WB of a family celebrating a birthday -T will then ask Ss questions regarding the picture and try to elicit from them some ideas - Some ideas the T will try to elicit from Ss if they are a family, celebrating a birthday, guesses on the age of the people, if they look happy and maybe their relations to each other.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-A text relating to the image will be given to the Ss. -The text will contain some of the vocabulary which the Ss will be learning in the lesson. -This will provide them with a context for the target language. -Ss will be told to quickly read the text and then in pairs discuss some of the words which are underlined.

Highlighting (3-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-Ss will be given a vocab matching exercise to draw attention to the TL. -Before the worksheets are handed out, T will explain that they must match the correct adjectives to the pictures in pairs. -Use ICQs if necessary. ICQs: Do we work in pairs or alone? -While Ss are working on the exercise, T will monitor class. -When the Ss finish the task, the answers will be checked as a whole class.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-The T will go through the vocab from the previous exercise with the Ss -Meaning and form will be shown by writing the words on the WB and eliciting meaning from Ss. -This will be followed by pronunciation of the words, with particular attention to the pronunciation of friendly /ˈfrend.li/, crowded /ˈkraʊ.dɪd/, interesting /ˈɪn.trəs.tɪŋ/, dirty /ˈdɜː.ti/ and quiet /ˈkwaɪ.ət/

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-T will explain to students the exercise. -Ss must read the sentences which contain 3 adjectives and a noun. -They will have to cross out the adjective which is incorrect. The first example will be done with the whole class and the teacher demonstrating on the board. -T will monitor as the class work. -Fb will be checking in pairs and then with the T as a whole class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

-Before giving out the worksheet, T will explain that Ss must complete the blanks using the jumbled words and also write the opposites of the words. -T will monitor as Ss work. -Fb will be peer checking each others work.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-Ss will be given cut-outs of the vocab and their opposites. -T will explain that they must then find the student with the opposite meaning of their word and pair up with them. -Once paired, T will explain that they must talk to each other about a birthday of theirs using the vocab and then write a sentence for each word. -T will monitor as Ss work. -Fb will be in the form of the Ss speaking to the class about what their word was and reading out their sentences.
