Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of of the passive voice in the context of when it is used in the news

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a pronouncing the past tense -ed correctly
  • To provide clarification of creation and usage of the passive voice

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will give the S a HO with a copy of the photos that they will match to the news story. After the T will allow the Pair to check FB.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Give the S a copy of the page 41 from the text in the workbook Make the students do it individual give them 4 minutes Pair FB then T will distribute Answer Key.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Ss will begin by using Annete's article to Id the passive voice in all of the articles. T will allow them three minutes to do so. Afterward T will FB and board answers. Then board the question " Why do we use the Passive voice? T will allow the Ss 2 minutes to work out the reason. If the T cannot work out the reason board the two version of the target sentence. 1. Someone stole a Television set. and 2. A television set was stolen. Give the S one minute to find the Agent In Sentence 1 it is Someone and in Sentence 2 it is Television Set. 'Possible ? 1. Why is the sentence in two passive and not active. The Fugitive James Sanders is in the subject position. A: The normal subject in the sentence should be the FBI because they are the ones who arrested the man. Their are two basic forms 1. Short passive (Objectless) vs. Long Passive (with an Object.) Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Game Passive Descriptors 5 minutes FB 1 Give S Handout 2 and have them work on Exercise 5. Test their knowledge of passive and when it should be used. Give 5 minutes FB 2 minutes and error correct.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Each Ss will be give a picture and allowed must write a news article. 5 minutes They must use passive and active voice in the article but may not use it in their headline. Now each Ss will exchange headlines and they must describe what is in the head line without using the title and in the passive voice. i.e. It is smt. that you cannot eat but look like food? It is about a powerful man in America?
