Main Aims

  • To practice modal verbs (must, should, can, have to) in the context of work.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Discossion in the context of Work

Procedure

/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll use a photo of an office and some people working around in order to raise the interest of the students.

Building context (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

After the lead-in, I'm going to write 4 sentences on the WB, start asking CCQs one by one to introduce modals. The sentences about work. After introducing half of the grammar, I'll give them a short gab-fill exercise to check them. Then we have a listening track about work, they should listen and choose the correct answer. Then I'll start introducing more details about modal verbs. Then I'll give another exercise to check more.

Presentation (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I'll mark a sentence on the WB. E.g. I must arrive on time today? and ask Ss some CCQs about the sentence and when they get the meaning, I ask them CCQs about the form of modals.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I'll use CCQs and model the pronunciation for the Ss.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I'll provide controlled practice to make sure that Ss use the TL accurately. I've prepared two exercises 3 and 4.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The final exercise is a free practice that asks the students to use TL fluently. I've prepared a simple game. There are four workplaces on small flashcards; I'll give one card to each group; the students are going to work in groups to make 3 rules for their card. Then they are going to share these sentence with another group; the other group should guess the workplace.
