Description

in this lesson, the students will learn the phrases for indirect questions via the guided discovery technique based on a listening context. I will show the photos of the family in the listening text as a start. Then Ss will listen the record to do the first two exercises. These activities will help me to get into my main aim (grammar, indirect questions). In the following activities, Ss will be doing guided discover activities for TL

Materials

Abc New Inside Out Intermediate Student Book
Abc Hand outs, cut ups. Listening text

Main Aims

  • To help Ss to review / discover the phrases for Indirect Questions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To get students to practice their listening in a context of a TV programme about bringing up children.

Procedure

Warmer (1-2 minutes) • To prepare the students for the listening

I will focus Ss' attention to the photos of the family mentioned in the listening text and ask them to guess what they might be arguing about.

While Listening #1 (3-5 minutes) • to get Ss to listen for a specific information and to prepare for the next stage

I will tell them we will listen a TV programme about bringing up children. Before listening I will give a HO and ask them to look at Q1 for a minute to read the descriptions before listening. They will choose the best description while listening. Then Ss will check the answer with a partner. FB: WC

While Listening #2 (5-8 minutes) • to get Ss to listen for more specific details

I will ask the students to listen the text again and underline the correct alternative word while listening the same text. They will work alone, but then they will check their answers with their partners. I will get them to listen the record again if necessary (i will pause it if they find it too difficult), and then they will check their answers with their partner. For Feedback I will use the projector and get WC feedback.

Grammar (post listening) (7-10 minutes) • To get Ss to discover the phrases of Indirect Questions

I will give Ss another HO to focus on TL. First question is done for demo. They will answer the rest of the questions with their partner. Then I will get them to listen the record to check their answers however I will pause the record for each sentence and ask them to repeat it. Feedback: I will again use the projector and have Ss come to WB to put the right answers. Error correction will be done where necessary. This is followed by concept checking questions: • Which one sounds more formal and polite? Q2 • Which one would you use to ask the question to your friends? Q2 • Which one would you use to ask questions to the person that you don’t know very well? Q2 I will highlight that we don't use "if" with the phrase of "Do you think..."

Form of TL (7-10 minutes) • to elicit the form of TL from Ss

I will ask them to do Exercise 2 on the same HO as a group work. I will put the questions on WB through the projector. FB: WC. I will use I will use cut ups to make the form of TL clear just in case they have problems with the form.

Practising TL (7-10 minutes) • to provide them opportunity to practice TL in a writing context

Ss will be asked to do the Exercise 3 in pairs. FB: WC (the projector will be used). I will encourage Ss to come to WB to write down answers. Error correction will be done where necessary. If time allows, I will get them to ask them stand up and ask those questions to other classmates (mingling activity). Couple of them will be asked to report back their & the others’ answers back to the class.
