Description

In this lesson, students will practice their listening for gist and detailed comprehension skills in the context of places they wish to live and go on holiday.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using text about places ss would like to visit/holiday.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking practice in discussing where ss would like to visit and why.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set the context and engage students

T will ask "Who remembers where I am from?" Anticipate someone to remember "London". Show a photograph of London on the OHP and ask ss to discuss what they can see in the picture in pairs. Elicit a few ideas from the class.

Pre-listening (10-10 minutes) • Pre-teach vocabulary activity

Ask students to complete the lexis-image matching activity in pairs to pre-teach/unblock key lexis required for the following tasks. Monitor closely to note difficult lexis. Then provide ans sheet and ask students to check their answers in pairs.

Pre-listening #2 (10-10 minutes) • To practice/teach TL vocabulary

Focus on TL. Use pictures on HO of each word to elicit. Concept check each one. Drill. Write down, with stress: A square A market A station A lake A river A flat [US: apartment] A bed and breakfast (B&B)

Pre-listening #3 (5 minutes) • To increase confidence in using TL

Ss to discuss in pairs where they would like to live using TL.

Pre-listening #4 (3-3 minutes) • To briefly familiarise ss with picture of Auckland, Keswick and Eyeries

Put pictures on OHP and ask students to discuss in pairs briefly.

Listening for gist (5 minutes) • For students to get an overview of the text through listening for general information

Play audio R5.2. Listen to three conversations and tell Ss to match them to the phrases in HO2. Discuss in pairs. Give ans sheet and discuss in pairs.

Listening for detail (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with a more detailed listening task.

Use list of sentences 3a. Ask them to write the words "Auckland", "Keswick" or "Eyeries" as they listen to R5.2 again. Ask them to check in pairs as audio is played again, and then give ans sheet as they do so.

Post-listening (5 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to respond to the text and expand what they have learned

In pairs, students discuss which place they would most like to visit. This is followed by show of hands by group as to which is most popular destination.
