Description

In this lesson students will be practicing their receptive skills by listening to two different tracks one will be gist and the second for specific information. They will also be practicing their productive skills of speaking, using the new introduced vocabulary with the context of shopping.

Main Aims

  • To develop students' receptive and productive skills by listening and speaking with the context of shopping.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce students with new vocabulary related to the context of shopping and to encourage them to use the vocabulary during the speaking practices.

Procedure

Lead-In (3-5 minutes) • To set the lesson context and engage students.

Teacher places some pictures white board, and ask students if they can guess the subject of today's lesson ? She gets the feed-back, and then asks if they like shopping. She gets the feed-back and tells that she loves shopping, especially books and DVDs from D&R and kitchen material from Pasabahce.

Listening activity (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with listening practice for gist and specific information

Teacher tells the students that they will listen to two men talking about shopping, and she wants to know if they like shopping or not ? The students listen for gist and tell what they understood of their talk. Teacher then asks them to listen once more carefull and tell her what they each said. She gets feed-back of the specific information listening. Who shops on the internet? Who shops after work? Who shops for food? How many times a week?

Discussion activity (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with a semi-controlled speaking activity

Teachers gives handouts and grouping the students asks them to discuss within their groups the 4 questions in ex.2 She gets the feed-back from each group and tells them what she does.

Vocabulary activity (4-8 minutes) • To introduce students with new vocabulary with the context of shopping center and shopping

Teacher asks the class to look at the plan they have on their handouts and asks what it shows? Students with the person next to them are asked to match shops from 1-8 on the plan with A-H Teacher does the first example of ''a bookshop'' - D When finished teacher asks students to go to their initial places and with the person next to them do the matching from 9-15 on the plan with I-O

Listening activity - Pronunciation focus (3-4 minutes) • To provide students listening practice for specific information

The students listen to the track 2.16 and check if they are right. Teacher asks them to repeat the words to focus on the pronunciation.

Vocabulary activity - Fill in the blanks test (2-4 minutes) • To let the students use the new vocabulary

Teacher gives out handouts and asks students to fill in the blanks with new vocabulary they have learned. They check with the person next to them the answers.

Speaking activity (3-5 minutes) • To let the students practice their productive skill of speaking using the new vocabulary

The teacher asks if students know any shopping centers on the European side of Istanbul? Saphire - Metro City - Akmerkez - İstinye Park - Zorlu Center Teacher asks if they know the chain shops in Turkey for Books : D&R Clothes : Beymen - LCWaikiki - Sarar Shoes : Hotic - Sports Shop : Adidas - Nike Then she does the Ex4a with the class

Rounding-up / summary (5-8 minutes) • To enable the students to have control of the vocabulary learned and discuss with partner for speaking fluency.

Teacher groups the students 4 people each and asks each group what items can also be bought from : Bookshop-Newsagent / Pharmacy / Shoe shop / Computer shop/ Music shop / Clothes shop She writes the shops on white board and asks each group to write their list under their shop's name.
