Description

In this lesson Ss will listen to four stories about personal memorable events. They will be provided with related vocabulary in order to understand the listening activity and speak about their own memorable stories.

Main Aims

  • To give student practise in listening for gist, and listening for detail regarding four memorable events' stories.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking fluently about experienced memorable events.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To get Ss engaged and to activate Ss' knowkedge and vocabulary from previous lesson

Put pictures on the WB. Ask Ss to guess which kind of "big event" characters in the pictures may have participated to. Invite them to describe the event and what could they do in such situation. Ask Ss to give a name to each character (they might be comfortable with names coming from their L1). Write given names under pictures on WB.

Pre-teach vocabulary (4-5 minutes) • To unblock key lexis needed to help Ss complete the listening task

Ask Ss to talk in pairs about their participation to one of the events listed on Material 1. Ask Ss to fold the page in the middle. HO Material 1. Give Ss 2' to complete this task, it shouldn't be too detailed. Monitor to provide some vocabulary and to check if Ss are using the events on the list. Ask 2 or 3 students to talk about their peer's participation to one of those events.

Listening for gist (6-7 minutes) • To provide Ss a general understanding of the listening task's topic

Ss change pairs. Ask Ss to listen to the recording (CD2, T7r1). Show which person is speaking on the WB, Ss can use given names from Lead-in stage as reference from now on. Ask Ss to discuss in pairs which events the stories are about, they can use and find them on the list in Material 1 (2'). Ask for FB WC. Elicit correct answers and write them under pictures on WB.

Listening for specific information (6-8 minutes) • To practise listening for specific informations and familiarise Ss whith the stories

Ask Ss to read the questions in ex.2 Material 1. Check that Ss understand the meaning of "take place", "mentioned" and "atmosphere". Ask Ss to listen to the recording again and fill up the boxes with their answers. Play the recording. HO Material 2. Ask Ss to fold the page in the middle. Check in pairs. T: "how many did you get the same?".

Listening for detail (5-6 minutes) • To practise listening for detailed comprehension

Ask Ss too turn around the page (Material 2) and read through the text for vocabulary. Focus Ss attention on "utterly spectacular" and "just completely come alive", elicit vocabulary. Ask Ss to associate sentences with stories (2'). Let Ss listen to the recording to check their answers. HO tapescript, Ss can check their answers in detail at home.

Speaking task (6-8 minutes) • To develop speaking fluency and personalise the topic

HO Material 3. Ask Ss to turn the page around and choose one memorable event they have participated to. Ask Ss to go around the class and ask for other Ss' informations, fill the boxes in Material 3. T can join the activity monitoring and help Ss with more difficulties.

Wrap-up (5-7 minutes) • To review the speaking activity as a class

Ask Ss to go back to their seats. Ask two or three students to talk about what they think is the most interesting story of the class.
