Main Aims

  • clarification and practice of collocations (phrases) with make and do from the listening to speak about festivals.

Subsidiary Aims

  • to listen to someone describing a festival to answer a gist questions and find specific information.

Procedure

Lead-in/ Building context (3-4 minutes) • to generate interest in the context of the listening

I'll write a sentence about my New Year's Eve. " I went to a boat party with my best friend on New Year's Eve" How was your New Year's Eve ?

Listening task (6-7 minutes) • to practice listening for gist and to contextualize and introduce to the target language.

The students will listen to a conversation between Hua and her friend. She talks about Chinese New Year. Then, students will check some statements about Chinese New Year and correct the false ones.

Highlighting target language (2-3 minutes) • to clarify meaning, form and pronunciation.

I'll highlight the target language by choosing sentences from the listening so that learners focus on it. ( do the housework) & ( make room for good luck).

Clarifying target language (4-6 minutes) • to clarify meaning, form and pronunciation.

I'll give the students fill-in-gaps activity about do and make collocations ( vocabulary part exercise No.2 ). I'll ask them to answer these questions in pairs. Then, I'll check with them ( B, D and F) to show them that the answer for these three questions is (do). I'll show them that in ( B, D and F) all the nouns ending in ing which means that nouns ending in ing collocates with "do" not "make". I'll check " C and F" to show them that " make" collocates with nouns for ways of planning.

Language practice (3-4 minutes) • to provide semi-controlled practice

I'll ask the students to work in groups and find nouns that collocate with do and nouns that collocate with make.

collocations practice (7-10 minutes) • to practice more collocations and their use

I'll ask the students to choose few collocations and write an example sentence for each one. Then, I will ask the students to stand up and check their sentences with the whole class.
