Engage Ss interest by asking them to say what’s happening in the pictures on pg. 30. Try to elicit crime, anti-social behavior, vandalism, graffiti, begging.

Lead in (3 minutes) • to set lesson context and engage students

Put Ss into pairs. Tell them to work through ex. 1a. Monitor and help if needed. Ask a few Ss to feed back to the class.

Reading for gist (5-6 minutes) • To get students familiar with skim reading for understanding a general idea

Focus Ss attention on the picture on pg. 31 and elicit what’s happening. Then Ss time to skim through the text and find the answer. Remind Ss that they only need to skim through the text, so they do not need to understand everything. Check answers ex. 2 a/b

Put Ss into pairs. Have them look over questions from Ex. 3 pg 30. Tell them to read through the text again and answer the questions. Tell Ss that this time they are reading for detail, so they need to read more carefully. Monitor and help if necessary. Change partners if possible. Hand out the answers and get Ss to check their answers in pairs.

Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • to get the ss to associate words/phrases by contextual guessing

Put ss into pairs and ask them to underline the words/ phrases in the test. Ex 4 pg. 30. Remind ss that they are looking for phrases in case they try to look for an individual word. Monitor and help if necessary.

Speaking (5-7 minutes) • to practice speaking fluency in the context of crime

Put Ss in small groups 3-4. Read the questions from Ex.6 and check any problem vocabulary. e.g. lenient and harsh. Allow time to discuss the questions. Finally, choose one of the questions and ask groups to give their opinion in open class.

Vocabulary (3 minutes) • To introduce related vocabulary

For Ex. 5 pg. 30, you could prepare a matching exercise. Hand out the exercise and ask Ss to match the words with their meaning. They can use the text to help them. Monitor and help if necessary. Hand out the answers and get SS to check in pairs.
