Forming Adjectives

Description

In this lesson, ss learn about forming adjectives using suffixes and prefixes. T elicits ideas from ss on the topic of inspirations. SS will then read a text on inspirations and using this text the T will introduce the use of suffixes and prefixes to form adjectives. SS will then work in pairs to do exercises identifying and using suffixes and prefixes. T will introduce the meaning of being sympathetic and ss will work in pairs to identify examples of sympathetic behaviour.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson ss will have a better understanding of the use of prefixes and suffixes to form adjectives and will have a better understanding of being sympathetic.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice in using real life vocabulary.

Procedure

Lead -In (8-10 minutes) • to engage ss in topic

T writes Inspiation.com on the board and asks ss what they think this is. T elicits answers from ss and asks if ss think such websites are useful. SS read text headed inspirations from page 22 of Module 2 life's ups and downs and T elicits answer as to what is blanked out word

Presentation suffixes and prefixes (4-5 minutes) • explain meaning and use

make sure ss understand what suffixes and prefixes are. Guide students in reading the explanation in WB. T elicits answers from ss. Draw ss attention to other examples of suffixes and prefixes and elicit examples from ss.

Suffixes (4-5 minutes) • further explain suffixes

ask ss to find powerful and valuable in text and underline the suffixes in the words. Ask ss to read the explanation in section 1a p22 WB and to underline suffixes of other adjectives. T tell ss not all adjectives have suffixes. Check answers as WC.

PREFIXES (4-5 minutes) • To explain meaning and use

Ask ss to find words unhappy and discouraged in WB text and read the WB explanation.and find another prefix in the text. Check answers WC. Ask ss to PW to think of at least 3 other prefixes. Check answers WC.

Controlled Practice. (8-10 minutes) • exercise to learn vocabulary

ss in PW complete adjectives in bold ex1 p22 WB.T Encourage ss to guess meaning of vocabulary from context. Check answers WC. ss write answers or spell words

Speaking practice (4-5 minutes) • ss practice using vocabulary in real life

SS in PW discuss what characteristics they most admire or find annoying ex2b WB. Encourage ss to agree and disagree and give reasons.

Meaning of sympathetic (10-12 minutes) • check ss understanding of vocabulary
