Description

In this lesson, students learn about the reported statements through guided discovery based on a reading text about the differences between men and women attitudes to relationships.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the reported statements in the context of the differences between men and women attitudes to relationships.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of the differences between men and women attitudes to relationships.
  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about men and women in the context of the differences between men and women attitudes to relationships.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Write "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" on the board, and ask Ss what they think we are going to talk about. - Ask them to discuss in pairs if they think that men and women come from different plants and what the main differences between men and women are. - Monitor and then elicit the feedback from Ss.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

- Point out that the text is about men and women attitudes to relationships, and ask the students to read the text and define some of the differences mentioned in the text. - Ask them to check their answers in pairs. - Monitor and provide help if needed. - Elicit the feedback from Ss.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

- Focus the students' attention on the statements in Exercise 1 and ask Ss to match these statements with the underlined statements in the text that gives the same meaning. Answer one of them to make it clearer. - Ask Ss to check their answers in pairs. - Go around and monitoring. - Elicit the feedback from Ss which will highlight the target language.

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- Write the following sentences on the board " -Both men and women said, "We lied about our age." Both men and women admitted that they had lied about their age. -Three out of four women said, "I have bought new clothes to attract somebody." Three out of four women said that they had bought new clothes to attract somebody. -Some women said, "We don't mind whether we get married or not." Some women told us that they didn't mind whether they got married or not. " - Ask Ss the following CCQs to clarify the meaning of the reported speech. - The form will be clarified through eliciting it from Ss. - Drill the written sentences chorally and individually and focus on the stress and the weak and strong forms.

Controlled Practice (2-4 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- Focus the students' attention on the exercise. - Ask Ss to choose the correct answer. - Ask Ss to check their answers in pairs. - Monitor and provide help if needed. - Receive the feedback from Ss.

Free Practice (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- Ask Ss to discuss in pairs the differences between men and women attitudes to relationships in their country using the reported speech. - Monitor and provide help if needed. - Receive the feedback from Ss.
