Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about asking for directions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of lexis related to directions.
  • To provide fluency speaking in the context of asking for directions.
  • To provide practice in rising and falling intonation.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in pronunciation, stress and intonation in the context of asking for directions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (0-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Teacher asks the Ss ; "Do you like to go shopping?- Have you ever gone shopping in a big mall? why?"

Pre-Listening (0-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- Teacher asks the Ss; "Look at the map of Northgate Mall and elicits the map." - Teacher tells the Ss; " you are going to listen to a conversation in which someone gives directions to who asks the way."

Clarification (8 minutes) • To pre teach some vocabulary they will encounter in the listenind audio to make it more accessible.

- Teacher introduces and checks some unfamiliar words: bakery, milk shakes, escalators, luggage shop, car park, lifts. - Teacher Introduces directions: " left, right, past, straight ahead, in front of, across. using a picture or a chart.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (0-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

- Teacher tells the Ss ; " say where the family went first, next,after that....." - Teacher tells the Ss ; " listen to whole conversation then find out what the family actually did" - Teacher plays the audio. - Ss write nothing yet.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (0-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- Teacher plays the audio again. - Teacher tells the Ss to use the empty boxes in the key to number the places in the order in which the family goes to them. - Teacher elicits answers orally. - Teacher tells the Ss ;" Name the shops in the key which the family did not go to ".

Post/Listening (0-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-Teacher revises the phrases in the text giving directions. - Teacher asks the Ss; " Follow the directions on the map; plays the audio. - Teacher monitors and gets feedback. -Teacher elicits from the Ss that the directions are all correct.

Controlled Practice (13 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks.

- Giving directions:- -Pronunciation, - Teacher points out the arrows over the phrases in the text. - Teacher models the intonation of the first phrase for Ss .slowing the phrase down. -Teacher asks the Ss to listen how the voice follows the arrows over the phrases. -Teacher plays the listening passage while Ss follow it. - Teacher plays the passage again, pausing after each phrase with an arrow. -Teacher asks Ss to repeat the phrase and intonation. Encourages them to move their hands in the direction of the arrow. -Teacher models the phrases again slowing them down so Ss can clearly hear the intonation. - Ss practice the intonation of the phrases in pairs. -Individual Ss reads out his directions to the class who follow the directions.

Free Practice ( if time activity) (3 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language.

- Ss speak about how to describe the direction to their homes.
