Description

In this lesson, students practice reading skills, and also learn a handful of words based on the text. The lesson commences with a discussion about the month each student was born in, and its zodiac sign. Then, students attempt to divide the signs into four groups according to the elements fire, earth, air, and water. After that, students try to make deductions about the characteristics of each element, and read the text for the first time to check their made guesses. Then, students read the text for the second time to answer some detailed questions. Finally, students try to guess each other's element based on their personalities to have the chance for speaking part as well.

Procedure

Pre-text (1-34 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher asks students WHICH MONTH WERE YOU BORN IN? to set lesson context and also asks whether they know what their zodiac sign is or not. If not, the teacher distributes pieces of paper including the dates each zodiac sign is designated for, and shows them a picture to choose their own star sign among. Then, the teacher drills students in the correct pronunciation of zodiac signs , and pre-teaches the word ZODIAC SIGN by asking WHAT DO WE CALL THESE SIGNS IN GENERAL? The teacher asks for repetition. After that, the teacher tries to elicit the four elements and gives students time to write down two characteristics for each element in their groups of four. The teacher pre-teaches some more vocabulary: INTENSE, INTELLECTUAL, INTUITIVE, STABLE, METHODICAL, COMPATIBLE the teacher checks understanding by asking some questions: IS AN INTENSE PERSON JOKING? DOES AN INTELLECTUAL PERSON HAVE A LOT OF INFORMATION? SHALL WE TALK A LOT TO AN INTUITIVE PERSON TO MAKE HIM UNDERSTAND A SITUATION? IS A STABLE PERSON WORRIED? DOES A METHODICAL PERSON DO THINGS CARELESSLY? WHEN TWO PEOPLE ARE COMPATIBLE, DO THEY HAVE A BAD RELATIONSHIP?

While-text (34-49 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

Students read the text for the first time to check their made guesses about characteristics of elements. They check their answers in pairs. The teacher collects feedback: FIRE: INTENSE, CREATIVE, EXCITING AIR: FRIENDLY, INTELLECTUAL WATER: EMOTIONAL, INTUITIVE EARTH: STABLE, METHODICAL Students read the text for the second time to answer some more detailed questions. They check their answers in pairs. The teacher collects feedback: 1. ASTROLOGY MEANS THE STUDY OF STARS. 2. ASTROLOGERS DIVIDE SIGNS INTO FOUR GROUPS BASED ON THE ELEMENTS FIRE, EARTH, AIR, AND WATER. 3.FIRE SIGNS ARE VERY INTENSE, EXCITING, AND CREATIVE. 4.THEY ARE VERY EMOTIONAL AND INTUITIVE. 5.LEOS ARE MOST COMPATIBLE WITH AQUARIUS.

Post-activity (49-56 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of language

Students are divided into two groups of four, and in their groups students should try to deduce that what their friends' elements are based on their personality. Then, the person who has been made deductions about is supposed to say whether her friends were correct about her or not. The teacher checks their understanding: ARE YOU GOING TO TALK ABOUT YOUR ELEMENT? Finally, the teacher collects feedback.
