Description

In this lesson students will get to practice past simple and past continuous verbs and deepen their knowledge of these two tenses by understanding when speakers of English use these tenses. The lesson will start with pair work activity where Ss get to decide when we use each tense while referring to 2 sentences written on the board stressing meaning. After eliciting from Ss the correct uses of the tenses, we'll move to timeline display of their use, as well as affirmative, negative and question forms, again eliciting from the Ss the form. A pair work activity will come next where Ss get to practice the tenses by putting given verbs in brackets in their correct tense. Next, Ss will think about different time intervals in relation to past simple tense, when the two tenses are used together in the same sentence and how past continues is used to set up the background scene. This will lead to the next activity, where Ss write the introduction to a story by using past continuous. A speaking pair work activity will come next, where Ss practice past simple and past continuous about an imaginary person winning the lottery. Focus questions will be put up on the white board. Then Ss will tell their story to a different pair.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of the past simple and past continuous tenses in the context of lottery game playing.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a story in the context of a lottery winner in the past simple or past continuous.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

We'll refer to the reading they did and discuss why it was in the past simple and past continuous. Ask students questions about the use in story-telling of past simple/continuous.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will have two sentences on the board in past continuous and past simple which will provide the context for the rules of use on these two verbs. Students will work in pairs and then the rules will be elicited from the Students.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Minimal time will be spent with the affirmative, negative and question form of the past simple and past continuous as well as with form.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning and form of the target language

Students will write an intro to a story using the past continuous and the importance of this tense for such intros will be elicited from students.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will be given Task 2, where they complete two true stories, putting the given verbs in brackets in the past simple or past continuous. Students will check with their partner if they've got the right verbs and then check with the key.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students will have several questions on the board which will relate to a story about a lottery winner they'll have to make up. Ss work in pairs and write the story, which they then practice by telling another pair.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In case there is more time left, Ss will extend the story they wrote about the lottery winner moving on 1 year after the big win.
