Description

In this lesson, students know some lexis about sea and water sports, also, the verb that collocates with these sports (go). They will know the time linkers (in, on, last and ago).

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of water sports in the context of sea life

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about water sports and time linkers in the context of sea life

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (0-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To start, ask the students if they like sports or not. Then, ask them which kind of sports they prefer to practice or watch on TV. After that, ask them about water sports, if they like to practice or watch them. Make a discussion with the students.

Exposure (3-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Show the students some pictures of water sports, then elicit the names of each sport from them. When they say every sport , put the card on the board to get the word correctly. Say the words once, then, let them repeat.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Put some cards on the board contain: ''Always, I .... swimming twice a day''. Ask the students to complete this sentence with the correct verb. Then, tell the that any sport has the suffix (ing) collocates with the verb go, specially the water sports. Now. ask them to listen to two interviews with Pam and Sergio and circle the correct time expressions. Let them work in pairs. Monitor them and give feedback.

Clarification (4-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Now, Put some cards with two examples on the board: ''Pam went swimming in August'' , ''Pam went swimming four months ago''. Ask the students if there any difference between these two sentences, they will notice that both of them are equal. So, ago is used with all time expressions. Then, Put the cards on the board: '' Pam went swimming a day ago'' and ask them if it's correct or not. Correct the expression with ''Yesterday''.

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Now, according to the clarification above, ask the students to complete the table to show the two ways of saying the same thing. Let them to work in pairs. Monitor them and give feedback.

Free Practice (2-4 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In pairs, let the students ask each other about which water sport they like. Change the pairs to have new answers.
