Description

In this lesson the students are going to deal with a reading lesson in the context of an article about Jack O'Neill ( the inventor of the wetsuit) , read and listen to the article, then the Ss are going to complete the sentences. Finally, the Ss are going to have a free practice exercise to write 5 sentences about a day on the beach.

Main Aims

  • -To give the Ss pratice in reading for gist and reading for specific information in the context of an article about Jack O'Neill ( the inventor of the wetsuit).

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of lexis related to surfing and wetsuit.
  • To provide product writing practice of 5 sentences on the context of a day you spent on the beach.
  • To provide gist listening practice using an article about Jack O'Neill .
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of a day you spent on the beach.(as a personalisation).

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (0-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Tell the Ss " It is very cold these days for swimming, Do you like swimming in winter? If they say yes . I say ( really!!) what did you usually wear for that? If they say no, I will tell them that my friend actually loves swimming in cold water!;" I wish there could be a way to stay warm in cold water". -Please note that this stage and the next will also serve as a pre- reading stage.

Pre-Reading (0-2 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-Introduce the picture of " a surf shop" to the students. - Ask the Ss to describe the picture and elicit from them, what do you see in this picture?, where can you see this shop?

Clarification (0-5 minutes) • To pre teach some vocabulary they will encounter in the reading article to make it more accessible.

-Introduce / check words : Wetsuit, surfing, sports brand, surfboards, beach, bath of ice, boat exhibitions, protective clothing; in a matching exercise on the board ( match the word with the picture). - Meaning and form are introduced in the language analysis paper .

While-Reading #1 (0-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ask the Ss to read the article quickly and choose what does the title mean (a or b)? - Check in pairs. - Monitoring. - Get feedback.

While-Reading #2 (0-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- Tell the Ss they are going to read ( again) and listen to the article . - Play the listening audio while reading. -Ask the Ss to complete the sentences ex2 p.g 45. - Check in pairs . - Monitoring. - Get feedback. -More exercise; - Give the Ss a True or False exercise; 1) Jack O'Neill loved surfing. 2) It is cold in the Californian ocean. 3) Jack bought a Wetsuit. 4) He opened the first surf shop. 5) When you wear a wetsuit, you are warm. 6) He lost his eye in a car accident. 7) His seven children sat in a bath of ice. - check in pairs - Circulate and monitor. - Get feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (0-3 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-Tell the Ss to write 5 sentences about a day on the beach ( How you spent a day on the beach?) (Individually) - Monitor and help. - Get feedback.

Free Practice ( if time activity) (0-3 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-Ask the Ss to speak about their day on the beach.
