Main Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information, detailed, deduction and inference listening practice using a text about How do you know Mark in the context of Parties, invites and conversations

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Parties, invites and "small talk" conversations

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-15 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Will put various photos on the board and will ask SS to walk around in pairs and discuss about various photos on the wall. The photos include, people at a party talking, a birthday cake, a baby welcome celebration at a hospital. Will ask them to think and discuss of why, where, what may be happening in the photo.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Will ask SS to listen very carefully to the CD I will play and discuss in pairs what they think was the main reason for that phone call.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

SS will read a text about what Brian says about Mark's party but some of the words are wrong. SS will listen to the audio and correct the mistakes. Will play the audio again and SS have to check and correct themselves. Will ask SS to read the audio script and answer questions on page 11. Will also practice n pronunciation of missing sounds (t).

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

SS will listen to other people talking at the party and say which topics they will be talking about. Ss will role play meeting new people at a party, the audio will play, they will listen and answer their questions. In pairs SS will role play the situations on the handouts A & B and they will swap the positions.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-20 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Will give the SS invitation cards and they will have to fill it out inviting someone to their party but leaving their names out. They will exchange the cards by picking from a bag and write a response at the back of the card. Ss have t go around guessing who the card is from If she gets the correct owner of the card, SS have to engage in a conversation and return back the card. SO it mean the SS will have a conversation with two people i.e. the sender and the receiver.
