Main Aims

  • To provide students with the ability to speak using the infinitive of purpose properly.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with the knowledge to verbally respond to questions concerning their reasons for making future plans.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will present a photo on the board showing the countries he has been to, the country he is currently in, and the places in that country he is going to visit in the future.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will look at a traveler's plans to visit 8 different places. They will be given an exercise to match the countries to the photos and activities that will take place in the future. I will also go over any vocabulary, cover pronunciation issues and familiarize the students with the places and activities.

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

SS will be provided with an audio listening and told to listen to their conversation. They will need to use information from the initial task to complete the sentence. Teacher will go over how to find the answer and provide it on the board.

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

SS will take the dialogue from the listening exercise and practice reading it to each other.

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher will go to the board and review the infinitive of purpose and provides them with the rules. Teacher will also go over common mistakes students have been making.

Semi-Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students will write down 5 places they want to go and why. We will go over them in open forum and practice reading the responses in the infinitive of purpose form.

Free Practice (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will mingle and discuss their travel plans and each others. Depending on time, Teacher may require that they have discussion with at least 3 other people. A feedback session will be held where the students can state where their partners were going and why.
