Pre-Intermediate (B1) level

Description

In this lesson the students will be lead to discover the difference of active and passive verb forms in the context of inventions and women inventors. They will be presented with the passive verb forms and the sentence structures through listening, and practice these more freely through speaking tasks.

Materials

Abc HO1
Abc HO2

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of passive form in the context of inventions and women inventors.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide language practice through listening for specific information in the context of inventions and women inventors.
  • To provide speaking practice on passive form by using the context of inventions and women inventors.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will show visuals of certain items to set the context. Visuals will show inventions that were invented by women pioneers in their selective fields. Ss will be asked: "In your opinion, how many of these objects were invented by men?" The pre-teaching of blocking words will be dealt with during the lead-in part.

Listening task(s) (10-15 minutes) • To contextualize and introduce the target language and practice listening for specific information

Ss will listen to a radio programme about inventions. They will get the HO1 and will be asked to complete the sentences with the relevant invention that they'll hear during listening. This might be repeated for a second time. The second activity on the HO1 is a more detailed listening task, in which they will answer the questions by hearing the track for a third time. This time, so as not to play it for a fourth time, T will pause the track after each answer for a brief period of time. For the first exercise, they will have a WBFB. For the second one, they will be asked to check their answers in pairs, and then provided with the written answer key.

Highlighting target language (2-4 minutes) • To highlight the target language so that learners are focussed on it

T will use the OHP to show marker sentences taken from the listening track. Each example will include the use of passive forms within the sentence structures. The ss will be asked to find the purpose of the given forms: "What does this refer to? Why do we use it?" The target language will be framed in context.

Clarifying target language (6-8 minutes) • To clarify MFP so learners can use the target language efficiently for further tasks

T clarifies the meaning, form, and the pronunciation of the passive form for each example, by guiding them with asking specific questions and CCQs, so that they infer the rules through the given marker sentences instinctively. When this part is over, they will be handed an extra sheet, containing the marker sentences for them to use as guiding examples to see the rules in action for further tasks.

Language practice (15-20 minutes) • To provide controlled/freer written/oral practices focused on using the language accurately and productively

For the practice stage, ss will be given the HO2, which includes two controlled activities. For the freer practice aspect, T will ask ss to come up with five inventions that they think are the best in their groups, and discuss them while using the passive form. At the end, T will give FB on the WB.
