Main Aims

  • To provide process writing practice of a standard phrases in business letters in the context of replies to complaints.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of language used for standard phrases used in business correspondence.


Warmer/Lead-in (10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Stress the importance of business correspondence and elicit discussion re. letters received, difficulty in writing letters

Controlled Practice (15 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

On WB, create a line 1 = informal, 3 = semi-formal & 5 = formal. Elicit words to be used on both ends of cline. Unit 6, Business Correspondence 2 Pg 32 Q1 - students to read 1 - 8, WC to decide where to peg.

Semi-Controlled Practice (15 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

On WB - set out structure of a letter using Unit 6, Pg 33, Q2 PW to answer Q3 WC to clarify responses

Free Practice (20 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Pairs to write a section, in their own words, matching Pg 33, Q2 while 4 x listening task students complete telephone message task. WC to contribute to make up a full letter
