Description

In this lesson, students will practice their listening skills. They will be presented with some pictures. Ss will be introduced to the topic of "missing things from home" by showing them some pictures of different places and asking some questions. They will listen to 5 people, then they will be given different tasks in order to practice listening skills of gist and detailed listening. The dialogue may be played more than once if required.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

+I'll start the class with the greetings and show some pictures and try to elicit their ideas about those pictures + I'll group them + Ss will discuss 4 questions on HO1 in their groups -When have you spent time away from home? - Where did you go? - Did you have a good time? - What did you miss from home? + Instruction" Talk about these questions in your groups" + I'll give them HO1 + WCFB

Pre-Listening (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

+I'll start pre-teaching 3 words and 2 phrases - I'll show pic 1 and start eliciting - Then they will see the word in a sentence"Our cats had a litter of six kittens" - Then I start drilling +I'll show pic 2 and start eliciting and ask ICQ(if needed) - Then they will see the word in a sentence"Dan Rather, anchor of the CBC Evening News" - Then I start drilling +I'll show pic 3 and start eliciting -He charges $20 for Starbucks coffee, a bagel, and his lunch. - Then I start drilling + I'll show pic4 and 5 then elicit by showing Ss two sentences - Old books that were taking up room in the office - The old TV took up too much room - CCQs( if needed) then I start drilling + I'll show pic6 and 7 then elicit by showing Ss two sentences -They have a knack for telling interesting stories. - Jenny has got a real knack for the piano. - CCQs and then drilling

While-Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks and get the global understanding of the listening

+ Ss will listen to the people talking about things they miss and complete the table + Instruction: "listen to people talking about things they miss and complete the table with two words" + I'll give them HO2 + I'll play the audio + Ss will check their answers in pairs + WCFB

While-Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

+ I'll show them HO3 + Instruction: " listen again and write 'who is speaking',then, 'what do the words in Bold refer to" + ICQs (if needed) : Are you going to write one word or more? [more] Are the words in bold important here? [yes] + I'll give them HO3 and give them time to read it + I'll play the audio + They'll check their answers in pairs + FB : I'll give them the answer key

Post-Listening (9-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

+I'll give them a piece of paper and tell them "Write down one thing that you missed while you were away from home. + I'll collect the papers + I'll group them + I'll give them those papers randomly + Ss will Talk to their friends about things that their friends have missed questions on the board - Guess who wrote them - Whose is the funniest? -The most interesting? + Ss will check the other group + I will ask a question " What do the most people miss?" + WCFB + I'll take notes while they are speaking then write them on the board and correct them with their help
