Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about Vancouver city in the context of my home town

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a debate in the context of my home town

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show the students some pictures and visuals related to some towns and home towns of some of the Ss asking them to guess where are they and which one is their home town, so they will be engaged and involved in the topic of "home town".

Pre-Listening (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will show Ss pictures of Steve and his girlfriend and I elicit the connection. I tell them they are going to listen to Steve. I elicit some guesses about what Steve might talk about in the recording.

Gist Listening (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening task

Listen to Steve and tick the things he talks about. Students will check in pairs and then I will do WHFB.

Detailed Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging and specific information listening tasks

I hand out questions in Ex.2 and Ss listen to Steve again to answer the questions individually. I will pre-teach them some vocabularies (English Bay, Vancouver Seawall, snowboarding) I will show them their pictures on projector. I play the recording and I may pause to let them the chance to answer each two questions. When Ss finish, they check in pairs before checking with the class.

Detailed Listening (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging and specific information listening tasks

I hand out the chart in Ex.3 to do it individually, I focus their attention on the chart and read the questions as a class. I play the 1st conversation and elicit the answers as an example. I play the rest of the recording pausing at the end to allow Ss to complete the chart. Then, They check in pairs. At last, I may need to play it again if there are some mistakes and then write the answer key on the WB.

Speaking (5-10 minutes) • To provide fluency speaking practice in a debate in the context of my home town

First, I get Ss to ask me the questions in Ex.4 and I give them true answers. I write up relevant vocabularies on the board in the categories given. I put Ss into two groups and ask them to talk about their home town or a town they like and I get them to refer to the ideas on the board to help them. I monitor and check, but help if asked.
