Description

The class comprises of 12 adult students taking part in General English classes at a language school.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about best and worst travel destination for expatriates.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a group work in the context of describing expat favorible countries.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Elicit some countries that SS would like to live. Either project the map on the screen or printed out and have the students guess what each country is.

Gist reading (2-3 minutes) • To get the main idea of the text

Ss are handed the reading text with the title removed. Ss read the first and last paragraphs of the text and make a suitable title for the article and then check their title with the real one. Read the first and last paragraphs of the text, what do you think is an appropriate title for the article?

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Stage 1: Introduce the theme and put the students in 4 groups of 3 (if everyone on present) and discuss questions 1-4 below. Stage 2: Have them make a list on the board as an answer to question 4. This provides an opportunity to get feedback from them, share their ideas with the whole class, detach from their seats and have some sort of movement. In this stage T tries to pre-teach some keywords to facilitate the reading comprehension. 1. If you ever want to live out of your country, where would you live? Why? 2. If you ever wanted to start a business, would you do it in your country or elsewhere? 3. Which countries do you think are the best destinations for immigrants? 4. What are some reasons that make people move away from their native country?

While-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information reading tasks

Stage 1 Students will divide into 3 groups of 4 sitting in semi-circles. T has information questions printed in 3 different color paper each set representing one group. One student from each group will run to the teacher and grabs the first question, they go back to their team and read the question, write it on the paper and go to the teacher to make sure it is correct. If the answer is right T hands next question and if it is wrong, the student has to go back and correct the answer and come back again to get the next question. The first team to finish the text will say Bingo and then second and third. 3A. Read the article again and answer the following questions. 1. What two areas was the HSBC research based on? 2. Which country is the best to raise expat children according to the study? 3. How does the foreigners' salary differ in Asian developing countries? 4. What contributes to expats’ higher spending power in Asia? 5. What makes German-speaking countries to have lower expenses? 6. Why are Bahrain and Qatar trying to attract rich immigrants? 7. What is a possible reason for foreign companies in Western Europe not to invest there?

While-Reading #2 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks

Stage 2 Students work together in the same groups to find either the sentences are true or false. Feedback: Either check the answers as whole class or have Ss put their answers on the board. 3B. Are these sentences true or false. Correct the false sentences. 1. The European union continuing problems have nothing to do with salaries in Western Europe. F 2. Expats are not really interested in living in middles eastern countries. 3. Most Asian countries are suitable for those expats who want to raise kids. 4. Egyptians tend to hate foreigners more after the coupe in summer. 5. Exapts in southeast Asia tent to more active because of the pressure from government. 6. Switzerland is one of the 34 qualified countries for expats.

Post-Reading (4-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss discuss the following questions and share their ideas with classmates. If you wanted to choose on of the countries in the text, which one would you choose and why? T gets feedback which countries are most favorable,

Post reading + speaking fluency practice (10-15 minutes) • To give students further reading practice online and get the chance of talking about the same context

Students works in 3/4 groups each group searching for one of the countries mentioned in the text and gather information from the internet. They should make notes of Education Child rearing Business and Extra Remarks. (each area of search could be assigned to one group member) Groups share their information and complete their table. Ss make new groups so that there is a member from different groups. To do this T may assign numbers 1,2,3,4 to each group member and then all 1s, all 2s etc team up. Each team member in the new groups will report about their country and talk about their finding. Then as a wrap-up of the lesson Ss try to agree on one best expat spot.
