Description

In this lesson, the students are exposed to a listening passage in the context of "A weekend break" The students first work on their sub skill of listening for gist and then zoom in on the specific information from the listening. Finally, a freer speaking practice follows these receptive listening activities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows the sts the picture on pg 50 Pre-Int Straightforward student's book and asks what they see. Ask the students "Would they like to stay there?" Elicit reasons.

Pre-listening (4-6 minutes) • To prepare the students for the audio and to provide an opportunity for them to use the vocabulary they know.

Ask sts to work in pairs and write minimum 5 things that could go wrong while they are staying in a hotel. e.g. dirty bathroom etc. WC FB, write some of the the sts ideas on the board.

While-listening #1 (8-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks.

T tells sts that they will listen to a radio programme about finding the worst hotel in Britain. T shows them the ex. sheet and asks them to fold it in half (demonstrate) for ex 2 only. They tell the sts to listen to the audio and tick the problems that they had. ICQ - What is the programme about? - Will they be ticking for the good areas or the problems? Prepare to re-play if necessary. When finished tell them to check their answers with the person sitting next to you. WCFB - Elicit the answers from the sts and write them on the white-board.

While-Reading #2 (7-9 minutes) • To develop listening ability and check their understanding.

T tells sts to unfold their papers and point ex 3. Get the attention of all sts. Explain that the events of the audio are mixed up. Tell them to listen the audio again and individually put the events on the right order. ICQ - Are these events in the correct order? - Will you work on your own or with a partner? Be ready to re-play the audio if needed. When finished, tell the sts to check their answers with the person sitting next to them. WC FB.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the audio and share what they've learned.

The T gets the sts to remember the story and circle Map about The King Edward Hotel and Nicky & Gavin's experience. T draws a mini circle on the WB and write The King Edward Hotel and Nicky & Gavin's experience inside the circle. Around the circle Y writes the words they elicited from the sts such as room, shower, lift, view etc. PW, T tells the sts to try and retell Gavin and Nicky's story. FB.

Free Speaking (5-7 minutes) • To enable students to develop their speaking skills.

T creates groups of 3-4 sts & tells the them that 1 or 2 of them will be the managers of the hotel and the other 2 sts will be the hotel guests. They can decide to be kind and amiable or an unfriendly manager/guest. WC FB
