In this lesson the students will get a chance to practice some prepositions of place using vocabulary related to houses

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of prepositions of place in the context of hous

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of names of the rooms and the different things found around the house

Procedure

Recap (7-10 minutes) • Review of Past Vocabulary and Grammar

- Write all prepositions on board and have them read them out loud. - Next have 4 students come to the front of the class and move the around. Ask the other where they are and they answer using the prepositions of place.

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask them: - about their home in their home country - where they live now? - about their neighbourhood - how they found their current house? - how many bedrooms they have in their house?

Exposure (12-15 minutes) • To provide context for the target language

- Show them the picture of a house and ask them to come up and write the names of the different parts of the room - Ask them what they have in their bedrooms, kitchen, etc. - Next show them the OHP with the pictures of things found in a house and have them come and label them - Correct the spellings - Next give them them a copy of page 44, 45 from 'English in Action' and have them listen and repeat the words. - Put them in pairs and to check their understanding, have them match the cut up words to their picture - Check as a class - Have them put them in piles according to where they are found- e.g. they put all the things found in the kitchen in one pile, etc.

Highlighting (10-15 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Draw a map of house on the board. Tell them: - in my house the kitchen is in front of the living room, one bedroom is across from the bathroom, the kitchen is next to the main door, the tv is in the living room, the lamp is on the table, etc. Now ask them to draw their own houses and describe it to their partners Have a few of them show the class what they wrote.

Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Hand them a copy of page 47 from 'English in Action' - they listen and repeat - Once they are done have them complete the exercise at the bottom. - Next write the question: Where is the .. ? on the board - Ask them one by one: Where is the book? etc. - Next ask them to use the sentences to ask their partners the questions

Semi-Controlled Practice (15-20 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Write these words on the board and go over them: - top, bottom, left, right, in the middle, in the centre, beside, across from, above, below, in the corner, square, circle, traingle, rectangle, underline - Draw 4 boxes on the board and one by one have them come up and follow instructions for box number one - Now put them in pairs and have them do the other 3 while the teacher reads out the instructions. - Show them them complete pictures and have them check

Free Practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- Write the word 'neighbourhood' on the board again - Ask them what they have in their neighbourhood - Next ask them to tell someone about their neighbourhood and they draw a map of the other person's description
