Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about Things will get worse.. in the context of future

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a debate in the context of future

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I try to link this lesson to the previous one and ask them about dystopia novels and give them an idea if they don't have and they work alone to write down three titles of novels or plays they studied at school.

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I teach some new vocab like (government, control, dystopia, infertile, pollution, revolution, totalitarian, underground resistance, pregnant. ) I elicit some guesses and check whether they got them and then tell them that we are going to read 3 text about " famous dystopias in literature". Then, I give them handouts about some features of the summaries and they just tick the ones they match them.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ss take a look to the questions and then read the three summaries carefully in 6 minutes to decide whether the sentences in ex.4 refer to: 1984, Brave New World (BNW) or A Handmaid's Tale ( HT). They do it with a partner, then they can do pair checking to each others while I write the answer key on the board.

Post-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In pairs, Ss will discuss whether they agree with the predictions in ex.or not. In small groups, they will compare their opinions WCF on task, Delayed error correction, as necessary.

Speaking (7-10 minutes) • To speak and tell meaningful guesses about future

I divide Ss into pairs and elicit their reaction statement 1 in ex.4, I monitor them and take their feedback and pick up on any interesting views or comments.
