Materials

Main Aims

  • To help the ss to practice skimming in the context of small paragraphs about some discoveries
  • To practice gist and specific information reading practice using four short texts about the true stories of how important pieces of art were dicovered in unexpected places.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification to the ss and practice them all together.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • Setting the lesson context and engage the students in the activities.

At this stage, T writes out pairs of art and artists, eg: Michelangelo-David, Da Vinci-Mona Lisa, Monet-Bridge over a pond of waterlillies, Van Gogh-Vase with Flowers. into small pieces of paper and give each student either a piece of art or an artist. T do ICQs to make sure the instructions were given clear. T elicits for any piece of information the student may know about the artist./work of art. The student remains with their new partner for part of the lesson.

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Setting up the students for the text and making it much more comprehensible for them through teaching a couple of new vocabulary ( the blocking vocabulary ). The activity is to match the words to the pictures ex1 p30. Then, the teacher will have one student of each group stand up and have them match the words to the appropriate pictures in the WB.

Gist reading (5-7 minutes) • To practice skimming in the context of the four texts, which are true stories that show how valuable works of art were found in unexpected places.

- Before giving the ss the texts to read they should make sure that the title of these four texts "Discoveries" is clear for the ss by asking them about a famous discovery for eg: Who discovered America ? or The teacher will have the students practice skimming through the text quickly and then will have them associate each text to a picture (Ss individually), there are four pictures that we do not need in the first activity. Ss should match each story to one picture (Ss individually) Once they have finished, they can check their answers with their partner. T asks ICQs to make sure they understand the instructions. While SS are reading, T writes the heading of stories on WB and once Ss have finished matching.

Reading for a specific purpose (12-14 minutes) • To familiarize the ss with some new information regarding art, discoveries ..

1- The teacher will give a piece of paper (activity)to each student in the class and have them read individually (scan) the texts again in order to complete Ex2 p30 in pairs or group 2- After they have finished, the teacher will project the activity on the board, and ask a student from each group to stand up and complete it on the board.

Post-Reading/speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T could use an extra activity, that could help the ss to use the new vocabulary in their own words and for the speaking task, personalization for eg: Do you like art? What kind of art do you like? Do you have any art in your house? What is it? Who is it by? Have you ever been to an art gallery? Which one?
